Put simply, teacher is guru in English language. Yet the term guru is used nowadays to denote a teacher of high eminence in an area of specialization. Earlier, the connotation of guru was a teacher in the ashram system where the 'shishyas' lived with the guru and imbibed knowledge as well as wisdom. I think that should still be the right meaning of the term guru.
