- With regard to branding, what is the relationship of the brand and the logo? Is it possible to create a brand without a logo?
- When creating a new brand, how the shape, size and colors of the logo are decided?
- What considerations brand manager must have in mind when creating logo to ensure that the brand promise is reflected, brand traits depicted and brand positioning statement supported?
Before understanding the relation between a Brand and a Logo we need to understand the difference between them for that reason. Being in this field for quite a some time i can tell you that branding is one of the most misused business terms to me, every brand which is out there have logos and taglines associated with them, not all logos are successful brands.
According to me branding means value, i guess everybody will agree with me on this and mostly the brands are founded on products that differentiates itself and builds value around it. Whereas a logo will stand for a company or a service, whereas a brand stands for much more than that. Its about the promise of a level of quality or service, and logo is part of an identity that may also include a tagline, the colours the designs and the fonts. Logo's are very much critical and this gives the identity to the brand. logo's have this intrinsic value of a brand. That’s because a brand exists largely in the mind of your audience in the first place, as it is important for the brand to register first in the minds of the consumers and the clients who are out there. A brand goes deeper because it influences perception and evokes emotion from them.
Everybody can tell about a person just by seeing his outward appearence or by the bodylanguage or by his clothes, similarly brands get this sort of identity by the Logo. To me Logo should always pointing towards to the brand every time, so that means the logo, like all of your messaging should be a reflection of the brand, its values and what it stands for. And finally does the logo give out the traits of your brand, in this regard Uniqueness, the meaning and what a logo can tell about your brand and finally does the logo relate to your value and the promise that you are trying to give your customer or a client...so these are relations that one can see between a Logo and a Brand. I hope you got your answer for your Question.
Before throwing some light on this relation between brand and logo, lets discuss what is a brand and a logo ????
A brand is the sum total of all of the activities and messages that convey - through whatever media and tools - who you are and what you do (whether “you” are a business or an individual
Logo is the visual representation of your brand ,but your logo is not your brand .
Look carefully the LOGO for amazon.com and a arrow from A to Z you might think arrow does nothing here ,but it says that amazon.com has everything from a to z and it also represents the smile brought to the customer’s face.
I think a brand is must include 4 important elements – A)The Core value i.e for pharma is the chemical B)Associated elements that surround the brand i.e Packaging, colors ,features etc. C)The extended Offering i.e value proposition and any other add ons that are not directly related to product.
D) The Psychological Elements-what do you want people emotionally to feel, believe and think about the Brand, e.g. Safe, Exclusive, Trusted etc this is for me the big one-that is why people pay thousands for say a designer label Item e.g. Gucci Leather jacket v High Street Store one or items that carry out the same basic function e.g. A Ferrari still gets you from a to b as does a Ford-but the associations that people have with a Ferrari are very different from those that they have with a Ford.
We are all (even if we like to think we are not) influenced by Branding, the best example I can recall is the “core” offering of one of the worlds biggest Brands that is consumed a Billion or more times a day…..it is-to quote one of their Marketing Directors.” flavoured, coloured, carbonated water…… would you pay good money for that ?…….or would you rather have a Coke !!
Brand and logo are two different identity ,in simple if it is related to a person , a brand is the mind of a person and Logo is the clothes they wear. A successful LOGO is the visual expression of the unique values of a business or product or service .
LOGO: stands for the company itself. Its the self mirror of the company, what it stands for, its mission, its core value. The colours would signify the growth the company intends to make, the progress in terms of technology and the DIFFERENCE that they would bring to the consumers in terms of experience.
BRAND: Its the christening of the stable where the company intends to present products to the masses. Its the identification of the mass produce that the company is presenting to the consumers which will ease their process of acceptance, usage, beliefs, integrity and of course emotional bonding!
The relation between the logo and the brnad of a company is integrated only to the extent of making it easier for the people to safe deposit their trust and belief in the company. My opinion is that a single logo is able to mirror diversified interests of any company whereas a brand is limited to the produce of the company in a vertical. So their maybe multiple brands that the company showcases in its diversified portfolio whereas a logo would be an absolute stand alone where its represents the core of the company, its strength and its solidarity to the people.
Significantly, a brand gets a bigger recognition because it has a capacity to communicate vociferously in all kinds of mass media about itself and it has the power to enitce and hence can be ingraind in the minds permanently. The irony is that even if the brnad fails to make a GOOD mark, it leaves its impressions behind! The recall is with the brand. If e.g. companies like Bajaj (Anthem: Humara Bajaj), Britannia, Hero Honda (Dhak Dhakl Go) go the whole hog to present its values and to thank the consumers for their continued support, then the logo gets integrated with the brands that the company has presented to people which have been used, certified and celebrated then the LOGO takes the front seat and there the company drives further the mission that the company has strived for and thanks people for their valuable support.
According to me, LOGO and BRAND do not really go hand in hand. They are two different identities of values and stand independently in representing the functions that they have been born for!! Fantastic debate Viktor. Hope I have been able to live upto your referral!! :))
James, you have brought an interesting and important subject i.e Brand & Logo. According to me, a Logo is a Creative Presentation/ Translation/ Manouvering of the Values/ Mission/ Vision of a Brand. It can also be articulated as the Transalation of the Intangible Asset values of a Brand(Oganization) into a Tangible (Which can be Seen, Felt) form, so that the Clients can have a Clearer Picture of the Brand and its Values:-
- Logo's are Created to give the Brand's Products an Identity.
- Logo's helps the Clients to choose their Target solution(avoid confusions from the Fake Products)
- Logo's are Enough, to explain the authenticity of the Solution/ Product
In other words Logo's and Brand are like Someone's First Name & Sur Name. Together both of them are more Meaningful, and they have a better Identity.
