Hi Vincent......

I think cloud computing will completely transform the way mobile applications are being developed, acquired, and used. Cloud computing will dramatically reduce the requirement of advanced handsets for running mobile applications. So handset requirements can be greatly reduced and developers can create just one version of an application. This trend is in its infancy today, but will become the prevailing model for mobile applications.

Thanks.....

There is always scope for a thinner client on any mobile no matter how advanced the mobile is. Cloud computing - computing, storing, processing off the mobile handset is a useful tool for bringing down the size and notching up the capabilities of any client. There is of course a huge amount of scope for mobile clients to use cloud computing as a tool to make their applications do more. A lot of that scope is also being utilized today by almost all applications.

But the real game lies in being able to make an informed decision about how much to rely on the cloud and how much on the handset itself. Each mobile developer makes their own trade-offs while designing applications which rely both on handset computing as well as cloud computing. How fat is your bandwidth pipe? What mobile you are building for /porting to? Is the data or the usage of it reliant on tools available within the mobile i.e. camera etc. All these questions play a large part in the decision to use cloud computing.

At the end of the day the question is not whether to use cloud computing or not. Every developer knows that silly clients and Einstein servers is what it takes to develop a great usable application. The real question is 'How much can we rely on cloud computing?' And the answer my friend, is blowing around in the bandwidth pipes available to you...the mantra is to measure the thickness and find it! :-)
