I have never found that trying to use one management style over another works very well. A project manager (as well as any other type of manager) must use a mix of styles that fit the situation at hand. There are times when an authoritative style is called for and other times a collaborative style is appropriate. The PM in question must evaluate every situation and choose the appropriate management style for that situation, always with an eye toward the personalities, impacts, and issues at hand which affect the situation. To apply one management style in all situations is an invitation to disaster in my book.
