1. Get associated with a lawyer who allows you to do courtwork. Big law firms/ senior advocates doesn't allow this.

2. Get familiarised with court environment-filing procedure etc..

3. carefully observe senior counsels arguing- eventhough you may not be able to appreciate the matter, more important is how they conduct themselves in court.

4. Read law magazines and journals thoroughly and keep a good quality notebook to keep track of case laws and your own updates.

As suggested by Aarti Gupta, start being a junior to a good senior lawyer practising in the field in which you are really intreated. Therefore selecating a good senior is the basic element. Then a suggested by Motty John, learn each step of the proceedings with all concentration. The Law field now a very vast. It is not only criminal or civil, but a number of new arenas are opened such as Family Courts, Company Courts, Arbitration, mediation, Labour courts, Accident tribunals, rent courts, Land Revenue Law, Local Municipal matter, property and documentation, Trade Marks, Copy Rights, Patents registration and related law, the list is endless. Selecting your field inwhich you find satisfaction is the prime factor.... then only proceed further......... GOOD LUCK to a future's Brightest Lawyer........

Attend the court regularliy dilligently and sincerely till it rises. Always keep a hand book on criminal major acts and rules of practise when you attend a criminal court and keep c.p.c. and rules of practice when you attend a civil court. When you represent a case simply don't vomit the instructions instead make earnest endeavours to imbibe the situation and try to procure the result. Analyse the trend of the judge. You will have something to learn even from the worst brotherin so listen to the examinations and arguements carefully ,analyse the impact of each questions and answers.Learn atleast 1 decision a day. show the guts to be independent once who get acquianted with the practice and procedure.Remember this is a profession where the entire fraternity would be against you if you are competent..then finally ..a real lawyer would start grooming within you...and you will become a god lawyer. A good lawyer need not necessarly be a sucessful lawyer as in our country I believe sucess of a lawyer depends not only  upon merit but also on various extreneous factors like support from politicians, political parties, communal and relegious, beuraucratic feed back etc...And I would suffice ,like almost all rules .this is also subject to just exceptions..

A fresher law student should first work as an assistant lawyer to a well experienced lawyer. He should see the practical world, see the tactics in real life court cases, help the senior lawyer, gain experiences and learn the art of debating in court before starting independantly
