Fear accompanies unknowns. I've never known any enterprise that publicized salaries who ever regretted it, but there are many who are terrified of announcing the facts because they have never tried it before. People tend to be afraid of things they have never experienced. It is no big deal, to those who have done it.

The simple act of open disclosure forces you to carefully examine your rationales and document the logic behind your decisions, so you can disclose with confidence. If you are afraid you cannot defend your salary decisions, that problem should be addressed immediately, even if pay is not disclosed; because such perceptions of incompetence or indefensibility erode morale and undercut faith in managerial discretion.

I tell you some thing from my personal experience. There were seperate cards for each and every employee, who sign as a token of reciving his salary. His salary is credited to his bank account. He is not in a position to know the salary other than his own. Because he is signing his own card where his salary details are mentioned each and every month. Good Marwari practice. Being the head of accounts & finance, only I, the Branch Manager and Director knew what is what. This happened in early 80's. But I like the systems and practice develped long long ago, even when we did not see computers. !! That's India !!
