Dear friends I think everyone of you are facing this problem in your house or in your company. Can you share your opinion on, Why do concrete surfaces flake and spall?
The difference in densities of the concretes in top and bottom layers con cause the heterogeneity the cross section and there by loosening of the bond between the top and bottom layer of the cross section. Thus in the progress of the time the concrete cracks and spalling occurs.
Second reason is the rusting of the reinforcement due to thinner cover than specified, thus bond between the steel and concrete lost resulting spalling.
The presence of deleterious substances like silt and clay lumps in concrete also causes weak concrete and cause spalling.
Concrete surfaces flake and spall because of three main reasons. we are exposed to cold and hot weather often fluctuating just above or below. This creates a problem because exposed concrete is subjected to many freezing and thawing cycles. The concrete needs to be air-entrained to have a strong resistance to flaking and scaling of the surface. If there is too much water in the mix of concrete the surface and concrete will be weak and susceptible to flaking and spall damage. The excess bleed water on the surface of the concrete should always be evaporated before continuing with the finishing of the concrete. If this excess water is worked into the concrete because the finishing has begun too soon, the concrete on the surface will have too high a water content and will be weak. It will most likely eventually flake and/or spall.
