Well, people always hate the guys who do the dirty job. Its not only HR but also a sweeper, a nurse,.... and the likes.
By saying dirty job, i dont mean to reger to HR personnel in a derogatory manner. In fact i sympathise with them for a job they do which no one else will do, not even the boss of the company.
People hating HR emanates out of the behaviour of a few black sheep in the industry who are rude, aggressive and ego-centric. But blaming the whole community for that is not correct. It is true especiaaly for HR consultants who behave as if the company is theirs for whom they recruit. They frequently forget the fact that without the people looking for employment or change, they wouldnt even exist in the world.
It is true from my own personal experience in the gulf where all HR consultants are arrogant and they expect the candidate to come begging to them on all fours. But HR consultants in India are better of as they know to respect individuals and truly work for their welfare except for a few black sheep.
Like Bandi says, HR department is an implementing department and people should actually hate the accounts/finance department as they are the ones who recommend a salary hike to the boss. And needless to say their recommendations are always the lowest as they want to show good profit margins for the company thereby earning a handsome raise for themselves.
So HR my friend, are only implementors and yes all practitioners of HR should never forget the human element and that they too are employed in the same organisation. An HR executive not only needs patience but also adequate pshychometric skills to handle employees especially senior people. They should never sympathise nor emphathise too much and definitely not look down upon a bad performer.
Instead a HR executive should be like a teacher - clean the rough stone into a diamond and not just add further lustre to a glittering diamond.
Very few realise how tough is a job of a HR . Its a thankless job which receives only brickbats and no appreciation. We never put ourself in their shoes and think . HR has very few options as he or she has to go by the company policy and guidelines. Its not that they can do on their whims and fancies. As they deal with pay and perks they are always at the receiving end as each individual feels that he has got less... So understand their plight and please dont hate HR .. .
Actually HR is viewed that way by only a few. Typically those that have something to fear. There are a few options for HR to reach out and become viewed in a more positive light. First work on developing mentoring programs or development training for the employees. Make available short workshops to educate the employees of those benefits available to them.
