Today one can see so many highly qualified youngsters around us in any industry. Some are M.Tech., M.E., MBA and so on. But with high regret, i am highlighting and raising this question for all to participate with open mind: Why today's youngsters though Highly Educated but are rude in behaviour rather than trying to understand the system of any organisation and work/talk decently?
My comment: May be egoistic / do not want to follow the prevailing system of any organisation and want to do of their own accord.
It is not the case for every youngster as it is purely depends on how it grow up & what moral values & ethics are taught to them in the childhood.
Thanks for referral, Muhammed.
I do not think this has anything to do with ego or superiority complex. This has nothing to do with education at all. This is because of our culture, our society, our way of life, our acceptance of lawlessness, our inability to stand up against what is wrong.
example 1: A person boards a train with a fully reserved ticket. When he goes to his seat, he finds somebody sitting there. He tells the person that "this is my seat". The stranger says "so what, wait for 30 minutes, can't you see I am reading?". Then there is a fight, our man gets angry at the stranger...shouts foul language.... and finally the stranger leaves. Is this the way to get your reserved seat?
exmaple2: A person goes to a travel agent for an air ticket. The travel agent decides to give a 5000 Rs ticket for Rs 15,000. Our man gets angry and shouts at the travel agent telling him that he is going to file a complaint and decides not to buy the ticket. Our travel agent immediately brings down the price to 12,000Rs. After using some foul words from both the sides, our man gets the ticket for Rs 8,500.
example3: A man goes to a city for an interview (in India). He catches a taxi from the train station to his hotel which is just 4 miles away. On the way, the taxi driver comes to know that his passenger is from a neighboring state and he is here for the first time. After reaching the hotel, taxi driver demands 3000 Rs for a 4 mile ride. Our man gets angry and shouts at the driver. The driver shouts back...... but after a few minutes the driver reduces the fare to Rs 2000. Another round of anger from both the sides......When the passenger threatens the driver with the word 'police', the taxi driver pleads with the man and settles for Rs 1200.
Now tell me - can you survive without getting angry.? Rudeness is our way of life!
The organization does not provide a proper method for imbibing new entrants into their fabric. It is left to each individual to learn everything for himself. Even organizations which provide 1 year training to freshers fail to instill the basics of work into the freshers. This is because organizations often try to mimic classroom / conference style lectures / presentations of great lecturers / facilitators. What the organizations need to realise is that a fresher neither expects nor require a hi-fi training program in his starting phase. At this juncture, the oragnization has exceeded his expectations. So he will continue to expect more or at least the same amount. But as time passes by, the masks are exposed & the employee now starts feeling. So he starts questioning his superiors as well as the organisational fabric. What is needed initially is a hands-on training on hard facts & realities rather than unreasonable fantasies of organizational vision. Once the employee is trained from that angle, then he will be able to decide initially itself as to whether he needs to work further on or not. Hands-on training on fundamental work execution is the only right training. Also, incorporation of legal bonds is a major source for employee frustration.
Good topic Mr. Nageshwaran. Thanks for referral Mr. Jabir. I agree with Jabir. We cannot generalise this statement!
Character-building is fundamental to any education system. Our character is not just what we try to display for others to see, it is who we are even when no one is watching. Good character is doing the right thing because it is right to do what is right. If one fails to imbibe from school and colleges and the environment they live, they ought to behave the way you expressed. If we don't foster this in schools and colleges, the resultant behaviour is one that is sinful.
Dear Mr. Nageshwaran,
In these columns, I have many times written, that many of us mis-understand education, qualification. It is the culture that maketh a person esteemed and not education alone. There are no Gurus in the universities. Only teachers just teach the book knowledge. No one bothers to make the person ready to face the society, they are made to face the examintions and pass through. Probably "Art of Living" to be made as a subject and embed.
