The menace of child labour has been increasing enormously and needs to be plugged. Despite considerable efforts of the government, NGOs and other development professionals and organisations not much has been done. The State Resource Centre on Child Labour, established under the Department of Labour, Government of Karnataka in Bangalore, funded by International Labour Organisation is an effort towards educating the elite group in elimination of child labour. As part of its many activities SRC has launched an electronic journal to drag the attention of the elite class. Relevant literature and write-ups have been invited from everybody to be included in the journal, which has been designed to be different rather than conventional. I request all to contribute your opinions, suggestions, queries, short films on child labour, CDs, posters, etc to SRC. I also would request to recommend all your friends and others to join the group in fulfilment of the endeavours of SRC.

Thanks and REgards,

B. V. Kishore Kumar

Yes I am always against child labour. I have been seeing many measure are taken by the government to control child labour. But the major reason for this is, there is fundamentally some mistakes in the system of the country. So I think if we change the way the system functions, we can surly control child labour.

I am totally opposed to child labour , unless the following conditions prevail :

1.  The child knows her working conditions , and has no objection to working in those conditions

2.  The child is sufficiently educated and trained for the work that she is doing

3.  The child is paid fair wages , and the payment made to the child is either used by her properly for her personal needs , or is put into some kind of savings account for her future needs

4.  The child is employed under safe working conditions

5.  The child is not abused by her employer , sexually or through violence

6.  At some point in her life , when she wishes , the child will be able to leave her present employment , with her accrued savings.

7.  The work that she is doing is in some way preparation for her future. A lot of children who work in the road-side mechanic shops , eventually start their own businesses.

There may be many more conditions which we can add , but is there any employer who will guarantee all these working conditions ?

Very well said by Mr. Sharma,I am totally with him.We have to think what is the root cause of child labour, they are forced by their circumstances not their choice. As the government thinks of country development , only picture came in mind to boost infrastructure growth, set up new plants, how to raise foreign currency & etc. These are to be necessarely done but keeping in mind also to set up good schools, hospitals & community centres in the area of the poor people.Poor children should given same oppurtunity which the others avail.

Mr Rajendra Sharma has correctly said. I will add few points -

age - If we talk of 10 year old kid - I strngly object

If we talk of 15 year of school drop-out - I wont mind. Not everyone can study so rather than spending money if he start work it may be better for him & family. Infact in many business families - father takes his young son to shop/business for work.

One question to all - How many of us have domestics of age below 16. I know many. Second have we objected to road side stalls where we can find kids below 10 years serving you tea and many of us make fun of such poor kids.

This is a real problem but I am not clear with the right solution.

I am always against child labour but we should also keep in mind why it occurs? I mean which child wants to work for living in the age he is supposed to go to school and play? Of course no one. His condition compels him to work and leave studies. So, merely stopping child labour won't work as it will worsen their condition. We should also give them free food in school and should teach the basic ways to be self dependant. In this way, not only they would come to school for the sake of free food and free studies but also would learn soft skills which will empower them to earn their living when they grow up.
