Facts about 'Jana Gana Mana' - Just a thought for the National Anthem! How well do you know about it?     I have always wondered who is the 'adhinayak' and 'bharat bhagya vidhata',    whose praise we are singing. I thought might be Motherland India! Our current National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' is sung throughout the country.   Did you know the following about our national anthem, I didn't.   To begin with, India's national anthem, Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, was written by Rabindranath Tagore in honour of King George V and the Queen of  England when they visited India in 1919.   To honour their visit Pandit Motilal  Nehru had the five stanzas included, which are in praise of the King and  Qu...

In what other language do people drive in a parkway and park in a driveway? Why does night fall but never break and day break but never fall? Why is it that when we transport something by car, it's called a shipment, but when we transport something by ship, it's called cargo? Why are people who ride motorcycles called bikers and people who ride bikes called cyclists? In what other language do thay call the third hand on the clock the second hand? Why is it called a TV set when you get only one? Why - in our crazy language - can your nose run and your feet smell? Sometimes you have to believe that all English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane: If olive oil is ...

This is really funny but then as Rakesh has said it is done wonders to get people along from all the continents as it is being used as the common language...i do agree with Devi's comments also....
Reuben Ray  |  Commented  |  2 years ago
While it surely is crazy, its partly due to ignorance & more to do with our inability to diffentiate between verbs, nouns & adjectives! But, well written humour!

Pranab Mukherjee's English A is for Awpheesh (as in Office). This is where the average Kolkattan goes and spends a day hard at work. And if he works for the 'Vest Bengal Gawrment' he will arrive at 10, wipe his forehead till 11, have a tea break at 12, throw around a few files at 12.30, break for lunch at 1, smoke the 7th unfiltered cigarette at 2, break for 5th cup of tea at 3, sleep sitting down at 4 and go home at 4:30. It's a hard life! B is for Bhision. For some reason many Bengalis don't have good bhision. In fact in Kolkata most people are wearing spectacles all the time.....Bhishon Bhalo and Bibhotso.... though means opposite ...used for same situations.. .depending on the Beauty of...

The Dalai Lama has been acknowledged by Tibetan Buddhists to be a reincarnation of the God of Compassion and by the world in general to be a Nobel Peace Prize winner but few know him to be a practicing meditator. All his life, he has been surrounded by masters of meditation and has been initiated into many different techniques. It is therefore appropriate that we pay attention when he points out one method so valuable that he does it everyday: Remember when you were a kid and they often had cartoons where someone had a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other and they were whispering into an ear -- one encouraging doing 'bad' and one doing 'good'. In a way, that's the basis of the Da...

One of my friends joins a company (big giant in Consulting, Outsourcing and Technology) and he was promised that he would be flying to the US for transition, so he took a lateral movement from a role of Team Coach to a role of SME. He couldn t go to the US because of some business issues. HR offered him less package, he accepted the offer because for the first time he was flying and off course because of the transition experience. The HR person who interviewed him did not tell him about the sub-levels in the organization and he accepted the offer. After a month, he comes to know that he joined on a role of SME on the lowest sub-level and when he raised his concern he was told that they brie...

' I will try' are the most disempowering words we can use. The only way of being powerful and in control of life is to be committed, which is either 'yes' or ' no'. Commitment is source of personal power. ' I will try' is the enemy of commitment. Real power comes when you say ' yes' against all odds and do it. You do whatever it takes to honour your 'yes'. A person who does that is greatly admired because he has  displayed a rare kind of inner power. But the greater power comes from making a promise that you don't even know you are capable of fulfilling. You take on a promise as a challenge. When you fulfill it, it gives you a sense of power and courage that you have never experienced befor...

Conventional wisdom says that an economic downturn is not a good time to change jobs and that employed professionals should just hunker down in their current positions and try to prevent getting laid off. But staying put could potentially do more harm to your career than pursuing a new opportunity. And a new opportunity could be your ticket to stability and economic prosperity. But a recession can be an excellent time to take a new job, provided you've done your due diligence.  Firms that are recruiting in a downturn are doing so because the roles they have to fill have a major importance to their organizations. Such strategic roles are unlikely to be cut if a company has committed to inves...

When people ,ask me for advice on their careers. I give this standard guidance when people complain they have a bad job: Put your resume together , start looking and try not to let the situation get you down. It will pass. But every experience, good or bad, teaches you life lessons, and work is no exception. Here are the top five lessons I’ve learned from jobs that were not a good fit: You Can Survive a Bad Situation : It may seem unbearable at the time, but you will muddle through and become stronger for it. At the very least, you’re earning a paycheck, and at most, you’re picking up experience and skills for your resume. Your Relationship with Your Boss Largely Controls Your Destiny at a ...
