By DICK BRASS Published: February 4, 2010 San Juan Island, Wash. AS they marvel at Apple’s new iPad tablet computer, the technorati seem to be focusing on where this leaves Amazon’s popular e-book business. But the much more important question is why Microsoft, America’s most famous and prosperous technology company, no longer brings us the future, whether it’s tablet computers like the iPad, e-books like Amazon’s Kindle, smartphones like the BlackBerry and iPhone, search engines like Google, digital music systems like iPod and iTunes or popular Web services like Facebook and Twitter. Some people take joy in Microsoft’s struggles, as the popular view in recent years paints the company as an...

Asset Bubble by tipsfortrade on October 15, 2009 Here’s a very interesting anecdote that describes how an “asset bubble” builds up and what are  its consequences. Read it even if it confuses you a bit…things will be clear as you reach the end…. ANECDOTE - Once there was a little island country. The land of this country was the tiny  island itself. The total money in circulation was 2 dollar as there were only two pieces of 1 dollar coins circulating around. (1) There were 3 citizens living on this island country. A owned the land. B and C each owned 1 dollar. (2) B decided to purchase the land from A for 1 dollar. So, A and C now each own 1 dollar while B owned a piece of land that is worth...

Keeping up with the innovations in the mobile platform, SEBI has now issued a draft model to enable stock trading via mobile phones. According to SEBI’s proposed framework, brokers providing Internet-based trading services will be eligible to use wireless technology for the same. The guidelines also shows SEBI’s seriousness to implement this action as it also lays a lot of emphasis on user identification, network access control and network security, requiring brokers to maintain adequate back up systems and data storage capacity. Construct Your Own Fund By Dhirendra Kumar | Jul 29, 2009 Of all the things that one must learn to become a seasoned investor, the hardest is the ability to take losses. Periodic ups and downs are part of the equity investment process, whether it’s direct investment in stocks, or through equity funds. Still, this is something that many investors can never get used to. It’s an integral part of many investors’ psyche and there’s nothing that can be done about it, except to have investment products that try and deal with it. Or, as I’ll just explain, you can do this yourself by understanding clearly what the risks are and how to mitigate them. In many parts of the world, equity mutual funds wi...

American president Barack Obama wants to end tax breaks that he thinks lead US companies to shift jobs to developing countries like India. Indian analysts fear this will hit foreign investment and jobs in India. These fears are overblown. Indeed, the tax changes may unwittingly facilitate the takeover of US firms by Indian ones, showing once again that protectionism ultimately hits the protectionist. The US imposes corporate tax on the global income of its companies, not just their US earnings. US companies have long protested that this made them uncompetitive in low-tax countries. To reduce this disadvantage, the US made profits earned abroad tax-free, until repatriated to the US. This tax...

Imposing tax on US based companies by US govt. will definetly stop or reduce job outsourcing towards India. So how can these companies will grow in India, if they don't have any job to offer. Their growth rate will decrease drastically. This will...

Nice insight Sanjay, yes this might work for us as the tax law proposed by Obama is indeed giving edge to the Indian companies over their foreign counterparts like IBM and Accenture....

Microsoft Corp is revamping its search engine to counter the dominance of Google Inc in the Web search and related advertising business. The world's largest software company, which is still in talks with Yahoo Inc over a potential partnership, has long been determined to play a major role in the lucrative Web search market after watching upstart Google take a stranglehold. Microsoft, which has been testing the search engine internally under the name Kumo for several months, plans to introduce the new service, re-christened 'Bing,' over the next few days, with a full launch next Wednesday. The service will be available at www.bing.com. Both Google and Yahoo have recently introduced new featu...

Bing is as good as Google...only thing MS needs to know is how to make people change from "google for it!" to "bing for it!" Image, video searches of Bing is far superior than google..and web search is good with even a preview on hover feature!

Printed in San Diego Union Tribune September 19, 1996 Unfortunately, there are some things that children should be learning in school, but don't. Not all of them have to do with academics. As a modest back-to-school offering, here are some basic rules that may not have found their way into the standard curriculum. Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teen-ager uses the phrase, 'It's not fair' 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule No. 1. Rule No. 2: The real world won't care as much about your self-esteem as much...

By Kelly O'Hair   Here the count represents the true count of the times this method was entered, and the percentages represent a measure of thread time spent in those method. The traces normally don't include line numbers but can be added with the lineno option. Looking at the above data, it appears that even though some of the ZipFile$3 class methods are called over 14,000 times, they don't seem to be consuming vast amounts of CPU time. Again, this is probably represents a poor sample and I would not put much time into analyzing the above information. Using HAT with HPROF HAT (Heap Analysis Tool) is a browser based tool that uses the HPROF binary format to construct web pages so you can br...
