Why do we wear marks (tilak, pottu and the like) on the forehead? The tilak or pottu invokes a feeling of sanctity in the wearer and others. It is recognized as a religious mark. Its form and colour vary according to one’s caste, religious sect or the form of the Lord worshipped. In earlier times, the four castes (based on varna or colour) - Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra - applied marks differently. The brahmin applied a white chandan mark signifying purity, as his profession was of a priestly or academic nature. The kshatriya applied a red kumkum mark signifying valour as he belonged to warrior races. The vaishya wore a yellow kesar or turmeric mark signifying prosperity as he was...

First Mail To: HR Department Joe Smith, my Asst Programmer, can always be found hard at work in his cubicle. Joe works independently, without wasting company time, talking to his colleagues. Joe never thinks twice about assisting fellow employees and he always finished given assignments on time. Often Joe takes extended measures to complete the work, sometimes skipping coffee breaks. Joe is an individual who has absolutely no vanity inspite of his high accomplishments and profund knowledge in his field. I firmly believe that Joe can be classed as a high caliber employee, the type which can not be dispensed with. Consequently, I duly recommend that Joe be promoted to executive management a...

THE NEW ABC IN INDIA: A= Anna, B= Baba and C could be Congress, Corruption or Connect, let’s see what the government chooses! The Duo Anna and Baba Ramdev’s call for action has once again brought the Central Party to disruption. Will this call against ill gotten wealth be once again sidelined by the rulers in their style of stealth?  The triumph card that congress holds is that of divide and rule. This time again will this be labelled as the Hindu card and once again be shelved? As the premier and his bureau knows how to mow and to grow. Would this duo be able to row their craft out of the crafty furrow? And the public waits with abetted eyebrow To see the measures of fasting takes its tol...

When we say that the sea is polluted, why we don't say that the every drop is polluted? It is a matter of each drop to pure itself. But how? How can a drop can make clean itself, as a part of sea?

Mahatma Gandhiji played a key role in getting freedom. He is an important figure and is respected by us. Perhaps there can be few things which he shouldn't have done but then in the end what matters is that he was the main leader in the struggle for independence. Yet another book on Mahatma Gandhi has created controversy which is doing the rounds in the market by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Joseph Lelyveld titled 'Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and his Struggle in India'. This biography claims Mahatma Gandhi to be bisexual and raciest. This has created an outrage not only among the Indian people but has also become a topic of big debate in all social sites. The book suggested that Gandhi, the...
