The CRR Story! A subject as dull as “CRR” shot into prominence on 28 th August 2012, thanks to two representatives of stalwart institutions of India (Note that I am refraining from using the word ‘stalwart’ to the individuals concerned – as these individual’s claim to fame is due the institutions they represent). As per media reports, Mr Pratip Chaudhuri, Chairman, State Bank of India (SBI) wants the Reserve Bank of India to abolish CRR as these funds will then be available for lending and will help country’s economic growth. Mr Chaudhuri apparently said why should banks be subjected to CRR and why not insurers and mutual funds subjected to CRR, who also deal with public money? While resp...

A good article on CRR ! Well written and well explained. When the news about RBI's remarks came in the Press, I felt bad for the Chairman of SBI. A senior banker should not have been insulted in such a manner, that too before students!!

Commodity, Stock and Currency markets are not really at its best now. Investors are worried that Greece may not be able to meet its obligations. They also feel that Spain, Portugal and Italy may also find it a bit tough to service their debt. Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain (some call this group “PIGS”) may unsettle Eurozone and therefore, EUR is on a retreat. Commodity and Energy prices are also hit by melt-down in risk assets. All this is furthering of financial flu which world suffered from in late 2008 and whole of 2009. Debate about the root cause of the financial crisis has raged over a year. There is now some consensus that an overly accommodative monetary policy and ineffective b...

One has to be careful in chosing words and more careful with whom one is interacting. Office politics gets its momentum of from loose tongue and heresay. Office politics, while can not be avoided, can be minimized by being careful in words and deeds.

Unquoted Funds and Their Evaluation Unquoted funds used to be one of the popular private equity vehicles during the boom years prior to 2008. They really earned unbelievable yields when times were good. Many real estate funds in the Middle-east did, in fact, redeemed much before scheduled redemption date with very attractive returns to investors and this increased their appeal. However, onset of the economic decline took the shine away from these funds. But in recent times, we are seeing a revival of such unquoted funds. The attractive valuation of assets and huge requirement of capital (with traditional lenders not too willing to lend) is the reason for renewed interest in unquoted funds A...

Hi. I read a computer trick today that is so ingenuous in its simplicity and so useful to all, that I had to share it with you. You are well aware that if/when a worm virus gets into your computer, it doesn't stop at infecting your computer alone. It also heads straight to your e-mail address book and sends itself to everyone in there, then further through their respective address books to more computers, and so on. Well, what I have read about this trick is, that it will not prevent a worm from entering computer, but it will definitely prevent it from using your address book to spread into your friends' computers; and it will also alert you of its arrival . Here's what the article says:- O...

I am really amazed at the capacity of the female of the species to voluntarily subject themselves to some sort of torture to look slimmer and younger. My colleague Souad, just 29 years, is planning to spend a large portion of her bonus and her leave balance on a stay at a Spa Piestany (somewhere in Central Europe) and undergo treatment to slim - for one full month. Likewise cosmetic surgery also has many takers these days. But sometimes, such cosmetic surgery can lead to disastrous circumstances – few years back, one of my female colleagues went in for a liposuction surgery and lost her life. Today, I came to know that one of my senior lady colleague who went for Lasik surgery to Dubai is ...

Fifty years ago there was hope that countries like Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan, could emerge as modern Islamic nations. But the entire Muslim world has failed to establish even a single university that could have attracted the students from West. Surely the Muslim world is in a state of transition. Agreed, monarchies of middle-east have deprived their citizens of their democratic rights and these kings were put in place by the vested interests of Western nations in the aftermath of Second World War. Islam doesn't have institutionalized clergy but exactly the opposite is happening. Muslims feel angry when Islam is associated with fundamentalism and terror. They do feel that why the death of m...

I like Jarnail Singh (Hero who threw a shoe at Indian Home Minister). He has shown that the short-cut to fame and that too with very favourable risk-reward ratio is to throw a shoe at a Government Minister. Though, not an original idea, Jarnail Singh used this technique in a very effective way and achieved what he wanted. Incredible that the act ensures instant celebrity status. TV guys will be after you for interviews and offers of tickets for elections and cash rewards will be showered on you. The risk is minimal. Jarnail Singh did not even go to Jail for a single minute (that too after throwing shoe at none other than the Union Home Minister). I see a lucrative business proposition in t...

My views on the future of US Dollar peg of GCC currencies are unambiguous it is going to be very tough for the GCC countries to continue with their US Dollar peg. The pure US Dollar peg for GCC currencies is not a sure thing any more. I will present my case in two frames: (1) The Current Situation and (2) The Likely Situation in the Future. First, a few words on why this peg is in existence: Formal pegging of GCC currencies to US Dollar was formalization of an arrangement for maintaining a fixed inter-se relationship amongst GCC currencies, prelude to achieving the goal of GCC common currency. The adoption of a common currency, envisaged to come into existence in 2010, faced a major challen...
