Most software projects fail. In fact, a report says that more than 80% are unsuccessful -- either because they are over budget, late, missing functions or a combination of all three. Moreover, 30% of software projects are so poorly executed that they are canceled before completion. However, there is help out there. To vastly improve the success of any software development project, it's helpful to follow these 10 simple guidelines: Recruit skilled and experienced people. Today's environment is more complex that ever. Tools help, but in the end, inexperienced people produce mediocre results at best and, in most cases, fail because they don't understand good project management and the best way...

Deliver customer value, not product features If you want to be a good product manager, try to deliver the fewest features which will provide the most value. Customers buy products because of the needs that the product fulfills and the problems the product solves. Features in and of themselves are useless — they exist to fill a need. Stop gathering requirements A manager understand unmet needs and use that insight to drive requirements. A product manager who just “gathers requirements” is doing nothing more than taking orders ...

Product Development: Product development is the process of designing, creating, and marketing an idea or product. The product can either be one that is new to the marketplace or one that is new to your particular company, or, an existing product that has been improved. In many instances a product will be labeled new and improved when substantial changes have been made. The Product Development Process :All product development goes through a similar planning process. Although the process is a continuous one, it is crucial that companies stand back after each step and evaluate whether the new product is worth the investment to continue. That evaluation should be based on a specific set of obje...

Many manufacturing companies consider mechatronic development simply as the merger of several engineering disciplines with which they may be very familiar. Although mechatronics is indeed an amalgamation of well-established disciplines, it is the convergence of these very familiar practices with new and emerging market forces that presents engineering and product development challenges. Companies that have traditionally excelled in one or two of the engineering disciplines involved in mechatronics are often challenged by the need to synchronize the development cycles of fundamentally different disciplines and integrate them into a single system. Manufacturers need to recognize that mechatro...

The other day I was in a restaurant and saw a sign advertising "Sliders Fridays." From what I gathered, they offered a deep discount on tiny hamburgers, called sliders, on Friday nights. The interesting thing about this discovery is that I own the restaurant and it's the first I knew of it. (Stacey's at Waterford: www.eatatstaceys.com ) I don't just own the restaurant. I also manage it, although I use that term loosely. I've taken the concept of hands-off management to the next level. Most of the time I have no idea what the staff is up to. They organize customer events, execute marketing ideas, hire and fire, change the menu, and pretty much anything else they want. I only get involved if there is a largish expense that needs to be approved. I see the financials daily, by e-mail, but I'm mostly about the bottom line. As a well-known critic of managers, I painted a big red bulls eye on my back when I started managing the restaurant. For the first year I was involved in the details...
