About "Best Practices in Software Development" topic:

Most software projects fail. In fact, the Standish group reports that over 80% of projects are unsuccessful either because they are over budget, late, missing function, or a combination. Moreover, 30% of software projects are so poorly executed that they are canceled before completion. In our experience, software projects using modern technologies such as Java, J2EE, XML, and Web Services are no exception to this rule. Most software projects fail. In fact, a report says that more than 80% are unsuccessful -- either because they are over budget, late, missing functions or a combination of all three. Moreover, 30% of software projects are so poorly executed that they are canceled before completion. However, there is help out there. To vastly improve the success of any software development project, it's helpful to follow these 10 simple guidelines: Recruit skilled and experienced people. Today's environment is more complex that ever. Tools help, but in the end, inexperienced people produce mediocre results at best and, in most cases, fail because they don't understand good project management and the best way...

There are few billion dollar corporations in the Indian IT industry. Our IT services firms are moving up in the value chain. Their services have moved from manpower supply to providing offshore product development and maintenance facilities. Many Indian IT companies have championed product maintenance, design, coding, support and testing. Few became successful in product development. How many have championed in project management area? Did we reach maturity level in project management? Where do we stand in project management area in the IT world? Do we have successful project management methodologies in our organisations? What is the awareness of team members and other stakeholders about pr...

The article is thought provoking for IT & ITES industries and gives a new insight to project Managers of non IT and ITES sectors. The article is laudable.

Here are some of the points which should be remebered by oracle developers while doing a project Oracle developer best practices Change the default Apps password from 'Apps' . If a developer forget to change the default password i.e 'Apps' this can lead to security breaches. Demand a dedicated development instance Problems can be avoided by asking their DBAs to provide them with a dedicated development instance. Maintain version control is important because it gives developers and their teams the chance to access earlier versions of custom objects when necessary.

I believe data warehousing is here to stay. It is the only place where you can keep track of your history and changes that has happened. I further believe that we are on the verge of building data warehouses that will outlast several ERP changes. Why? Well, for many it still comes as a nasty surprise that you will have to rebuild your warehouse every time you change one of the surrounding systems. Only in the last few years have we found methods to model our warehouses with the flexibility necessary to cope with changes like these. In the present situation what we have to do is get best practices for data warehouse  development..while developing data warehouses we have to keep in mind these...

Why Senior Management Needs to Know About Best Practices Due to their technical nature, IT standards and best practices are mostly known to the experts IT professionals, managers and advisors who may adopt and use them with good intent but potentially without a business focus or the customer s involvement and support. Even in organisations where practices such as C OBI T and ITIL have been implemented, some business managers understand little about their real purpose and are unable to influence their use. To realise the full value of best practices, the customers of IT services need be involved, as the effective use of IT should be a collaborative experience between the customer and interna...

I have an opinion that even in senior management some people are aware of the best practices in use and they must also be knowing about the implementation of these practises

Software as a service (SaaS) is the talk of the day and it will increase in its popularity since there a scope of opensource to push it higher and higher. Gartner predicts that SaaS will be driven by opensource in the future. And the prediction is supported by facts and figures. By 2010, 90 percent of software as a service (SaaS) providers will have some open-source component in their technology infrastructure stacks (that is, operating system, application server and database) to reduce software acquisition expenses, according to Gartner, Inc.   User communities are expanding around application-platform-as-a-service providers and will leverage open-source practices for sharing software applications.   As the number of software as a service users increase the opensource support will also grow along with it, definitely. The more SaaS vendors use open source in the technology stack, the lower their software acquisition cost becomes. Users, however, should not expect cost savings to be...

Nicholas Carr's article "IT Doesn't Matter" (Harvard Business Review, May 2003) challenges the value proposition for IT. He argues that as companies become more dependent on IT for their day-to-day operations, so the emphasis switches to managing availability, reliability and security. As such, businesses should manage IT as a commodity. Do you subscribe to the Carr view? Do you align IT with the business in a purely supportive role? But innovations within IT continue to create possibilities and options for businesses that did not exist before. But where IT engages the business, pro actively and as an equal, companies will be able to continue to deliver strategic advantage through IT. The following will be useful in assessing the level of business engagement: - to whom does the IT function report in your business? For example, the Board (where the CIO/IT director is a Board member), the CEO (who has a business development focus), the COO (who has a business operations focus) or the...
