About "Corporal Punishment - Is it justified??" topic:

Welcome to the ugly and very real world of 'corporal punishment' - the deliberate infliction of physical pain, intended as punishment or correction from some sort of wrong action. This punishment can take many forms - spanking, whipping, beating, slapping, striking, or lashing. Because there are no rules involved in such acts, there is no limit to what exactly constitutes corporal punishment.

Corporal punishment is widely recognised as a form of child abuse, and has been outlawed and banned in some countries, including India. But it goes on nevertheless, in cases where a teacher uses a subjective definition of 'punishment' and 'correction' and abuses power over the child - sometimes fatally.

When the teachers cross a limit , when  punishing a child it may be considered a criminal offence. The teacher can not hit a child with the intention of hitting and hurting him/her. If the intention is to correct a child and without anger or...

Yes, all kinds of brutalities on the children in the name of making them desciplined should be banned and the violators, be it teachers or parents, should be treated as criminals.
Kavitha Shankar  |  Argues in support of  "Yes"  |  2 years ago
Yes, it should be. Punishing small children for mistakes is considerable, but beating them to death is a crime. It should be make a criminal offence so that  people think twice before raising hands on children. Or else there is no need to cry...

Human resources development (HRD) minister Kapil Sibal today said tough guidelines will be issued to check corporal punishment in schools in the backdrop of a 13-year-old student in Kolkata allegedly ending his life after being caned by his principal.                                            Sibal has asked chairperson of National Commission Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Shantha Sinha to frame and issue tough guidelines to get rid of corporal punishment in schools. 'The children are very precious to us. They are the future of our country. No child should be subjected to harassment and thereby get demotivated and be pushed out of the system,' he told reporters in New Delhi. Rouvanjit ...

How IT cos hurt environment   The machines that handle the world's computing tasks are also some of the planet's biggest  polluters . Data centers, PCs, mobile phones and gaming consoles use electricity that frequently comes from coal-burning power plants or other sources of energy that give off high  carbon  emissions.  The information and communication technology (ICT) industry in the US is on track to quadruple its consumption of electricity between 2009 and 2020, according to a study released today from the Institute for Sustainable and Applied Infodynamics (ISAID) in  Singapore  and Rice University in Houston,  Texas .  Unless electronics can be altered to become significantly more energy-efficient, the related carbon emissions from these products are set to grow as well, says the report. In the US carbon emissions related to tech products will grow from 72.95 megatons of carbon dioxide released in 2009 to 195.06 megatons released in 2020.  About 6 per cent of the world's...

Nicholas Carr's article "IT Doesn't Matter" (Harvard Business Review, May 2003) challenges the value proposition for IT. He argues that as companies become more dependent on IT for their day-to-day operations, so the emphasis switches to managing availability, reliability and security. As such, businesses should manage IT as a commodity. Do you subscribe to the Carr view? Do you align IT with the business in a purely supportive role? But innovations within IT continue to create possibilities and options for businesses that did not exist before. But where IT engages the business, pro actively and as an equal, companies will be able to continue to deliver strategic advantage through IT. The following will be useful in assessing the level of business engagement: - to whom does the IT function report in your business? For example, the Board (where the CIO/IT director is a Board member), the CEO (who has a business development focus), the COO (who has a business operations focus) or the...

Most IT project evaluations are like the tail wagging the dog. They begin with IT strategy, rather than the goals of the business. In fact, IT strategy should be the third link in a chain that begins with business strategy, which in turn governs the product or service strategy, which then drives IT strategy. Lets understand this with a mid size CRM company Business strategy: Increase the customer base by 20 percent in the next year by providing increased functionality such as business operations analytics and executive dashboards. Product strategy: Develop an alliance with a business intelligence (BI) software company to add analytical capabilities to the CRM software. IT strategy: Create a new software platform that allows for easy integration with the BI software company and others. IT projects: Develop a Web services–based platform that offers universal data exchange and messaging between the CRM software and the BI software.   While this hierarchy reveals whether IT projects...

Software as a service (SaaS) is the talk of the day and it will increase in its popularity since there a scope of opensource to push it higher and higher. Gartner predicts that SaaS will be driven by opensource in the future. And the prediction is supported by facts and figures. By 2010, 90 percent of software as a service (SaaS) providers will have some open-source component in their technology infrastructure stacks (that is, operating system, application server and database) to reduce software acquisition expenses, according to Gartner, Inc.   User communities are expanding around application-platform-as-a-service providers and will leverage open-source practices for sharing software applications.   As the number of software as a service users increase the opensource support will also grow along with it, definitely. The more SaaS vendors use open source in the technology stack, the lower their software acquisition cost becomes. Users, however, should not expect cost savings to be...
