Organizations are no longer constrained by geographic boundaries. Today, as they diversify their businesses into global markets, cross cultural training and orientation for employees has become an integral part of the HR agenda. Every country and every organization has its own business culture. Like in China, maintaining eye contact during a discussion is considered offensive and in many European countries, it is rude to refuse dinner invitations while conducting business. In the US,business conversation may take place during meals. But unless initiated by the host, it is rude to talk business over lunch in Czech Republic, Italy and Greece. Cross cultural competency is valued highly in today...

When I talk about the Indian business culture to American managers and technical professionals involved in offshoring or offshore outsourcing to India, someone can inevitably ask, 'So what are our offshore teams and counterparts in India being taught about American business culture?'. Isn't that an interesting question. The answer is, 'More than they used to, but seldom at a level deep enough to inculcate the attitudes, thought patterns and behavior norms that would ensure optimal effectiveness in working with Americans.' Training in 'soft skills' is no longer as undervalued in India as it used to be. Growing numbers of Indian companies are coming to realize that the ability of their employ...

The other day I was in a restaurant and saw a sign advertising "Sliders Fridays." From what I gathered, they offered a deep discount on tiny hamburgers, called sliders, on Friday nights. The interesting thing about this discovery is that I own the restaurant and it's the first I knew of it. (Stacey's at Waterford:  www.eatatstaceys.com ) I don't just own the restaurant. I also manage it, although I use that term loosely. I've taken the concept of hands-off management to the next level. Most of the time I have no idea what the staff is up to. They organize customer events, execute marketing ideas, hire and fire, change the menu, and pretty much anything else they want. I only get involved if there is a largish expense that needs to be approved. I see the financials daily, by e-mail, but I'm mostly about the bottom line. As a well-known critic of managers, I painted a big red bulls eye on my back when I started managing the restaurant. For the first year I was involved in the details...
