Business took a page from the manufacturing book with an adage from Edward Deming, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure”. Unfortunately, the quality guru never said it - because many important parts of your business can’t be gauged well. This applies most to employees. Humans are much trickier to measure than rubber boots for submarine telecommunication cables. People game the metrics to look good. Look at software. Programming managers like to measure software bug counts and lines of code. Coders naturally respond to bug counts by arguing with the testers about bugs instead of fixing them - or even avoid the bug tracking system. If you measure lines of code written, developers will ten...

Different countries have different approaches of doing business in their own country as well as outside their home country. The business in particular nation is influenced by its demographic, psycho graphic, Socio-economic, Political and Legal environments. In India, we are having an extensively diversified culture,we need tailor made solutions to our conditions. The culture and values have direct influences on our decision making abilities and we are having our own nationalized set of solutions. Our culture and behavior guides us towards the new future of retail marketing in which the stability and consolidation is replaced by speed and imagination, transactions are overwhelmed by relation...

Hi Friends, Last month I had a meeting with one of my old friends, who is now VP–HR in a fairly large IT setup. He informed me that he is planning to lay off a couple of hundred people in his company, in a phased manner. What surprised me was that he mentioned that out of them around 80% are ‘difficult employees’. I wondered aloud what was his definition of a ‘difficult employee’. What he told me was interesting and forms the basis of this post. “In every department/organization there are few people who are arrogant, demeaning (to others), insubordinate, not trustworthy, (always) cribbing and unproductive. And these employees are a huge drain for an organization in terms of wasted time, reduced productivity, inefficiency, and ultimately resulting in customer loss.” I again asked him as to why did the team, then not take precautions while hiring? He said these are traits and sometimes it is difficult to observe them during an interview. You get to know about them only from...

Hi Friends, I am sharing with the reviews of IBM on work culture, growth prospects salary, done by their employees. Please share your views. A Project Manager wrote: What I like about IBM: "IBM offers a very flexible working environment. In most cases, no one will ask you what time you come or go from office. Neither the logs of the swipe card will be analyzed to take some action against you in normal circumstances. In special circumstances, the company can even allow you to work from home. No blocking of internet or phones . All in all, you are "not" working in a jail. It has a wealth of knowledge..... " What I don't like about IBM: "Sometimes you feel that there are too many processes to follow. The company is so huge that it is a challenge to make people aware of existing processes. I have often seen it happening that sometimes small groups within IBM try to develop their own processes, often unaware that such a best practice already exists and can be leveraged. Ofcourses, Lou...
