Clearly embarrassed by the splurging ways of his cabinet colleagues, while the government is on an all out austerity drive, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday asked External Affairs Minister SM Krishna and his deputy Shashi Tharoor to vacate their respective five-star suites and find accommodation in state–run guesthouses. But the immediate trigger behind Pranab’s public directive to such senior ministers to change is a newspaper report published today, which chided the two high-profile ministers for staying in expensive hotels, when the country is facing drought like situation in many states. 'I have requested both the ministers to vacate the hotel rooms and go to their respectiv...

Now the Government has asked judges to pitch in too. Law Minister Veerappa Moily has said that judiciary should respond to the “agony of the people or realities of the society”. “Judiciary is an autonomous entity. It is for them to adopt austerity measures from time to time - after all it is responding to the agony of the people or realities of the society. There is nothing wrong if the judiciary responds to it. It seems in May 2008 had led officials to admit that foreign visits by judges have been curtailed by a third. The Prime Minister's Office has since then refused permission to a number of requests for foreign visits by judges. According to guidelines, judges should avoid travelling a...

Know Where a Wine Really Comes From by Jim Gordon The mantra of real estate buyers everywhere -- "location, location, location" -- is almost as important for wine buyers. While certain foods and beverages carry a general notation of their origin, like Idaho potatoes and Sumatra coffee, wine can narrow the notion down to the precise plot of land where the grapes grew. Governments in virtually all winemaking countries have made it illegal to cheat consumers by putting misleading information about a wine's origin on a label. They needed to, because a minority of dishonest winemakers is constantly tempted to make more money by tricking the consumer. They make a wine from inexpensive grapes grown in a low-quality growing region, then pass it off as something pedigreed and expensive. Most wine producers are honest, of course, but it's still important to know what you're buying. Look carefully at the wine label to learn at least the minimum. The front label of most U.S. wines usually...
