Most software companies, and technology companies in general, don't understand product management. The result is wasted time, money and creativity. But the companies that know how to harness the talents of skilled product managers reap big rewards, namely successful products, higher revenues, motivated employees and, last but not least, smiling CEOs. Is it easy to get your product-management act together? The answer is no, but Steve Johnson can tell us how to do it. Johnson is an instructor at Pragmatic Marketing, a product-marketing training company in Scottsdale, Ariz., and also webmaster of productmarketing.com, a Web site housing a compendium of free information for technology product ma...

Seven Traits of Successful Product Managers 1. Communication Skills Successful product managers are excellent communicators. This is the most common characteristic shared by all excellent product managers I've worked with - written and oral communication skills . Why is this important? At most companies, a critical role product managers play is acting as a communication hub on product-related matters - as shown in the figure below. This means - a successful product manager not only has the ability to communicate effectively with different roles, but also has the ability to: o Communicate with different personality-types. § For example, majority of engineers tend t...

Deliver customer value, not product features If you want to be a good product manager, try to deliver the fewest features which will provide the most value. Customers buy products because of the needs that the product fulfills and the problems the product solves. Features in and of themselves are useless — they exist to fill a need. Customers will find product features valuable only if those features satisfy a need and if the act of filling that need is something which is valuable to the customer. Stop gathering requirements A manager understand unmet needs and use that insight to drive requirements. A product manager who just “gathers requirements” is doing nothing more than taking orders ...

I recently finished a series of articles on being a Great Product Manager. I want to switch gears a bit and spend some time talking about the function of Product Management in software companies. As we know, product managers and product management are not isolated to software companies, but the role of product management in software companies is different from the role of product (or brand) management in other domains, such as the financial sector or Consumer Packaged Goods ( CPG ) firms. For example: How many new features does a release of a new shampoo have? How much time does the brand manager spend with the chemists working on that new shampoo formulation during the release cycle ? How ...

When I was working in Raymond's limited i use to give top priority to process management.. What i believe is for a successful product to make the process has to be in line and well verse to the requirement of the product specification..i think maturity comes with experience and my experience say that flexibility should be there in the process..Todays world is highly competitive and getting customer for your product is not very easy..again getting order in bulk is a distant dream.so the concept should not be here of mass production rather than it should of batch production. But i not saying that ignore product management, Because todays customer require every day a new product if you cannot ...

Turn your passion into your Career just now i have seen this Blog on internet. 1. Opportunity lies in every difficulty. Own this concept. A bad attitude can be your worst enemy. It’s far too easy to feel defeated or depressed when things get difficult. You need to be your own biggest cheerleader, fire up your ambition to succeed and listen to you gut. If it’s telling you to get out of what you’re currently doing, or away from the path that you’re on now, listen carefully. Recognize the new opportunities presented by your challenges. They’re always in there. 2. Start by Tapping into Your Passion It’s there, whether you recognize it or not. We’re all passionate about something – even if it doesn’t strike us as job or career worthy. Think about all of the things that get you fired up, excited, eager to act…write those things down. Ask close others to help add to the list. Sit with that paper for a few days. Add notes, details, and illustrations. Fill the page with things...

This is a story from web : One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along the route. No problems for the first few stops - a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well. At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back. Did I mention that the driver was five feet three, thin, and basically weak? Well, he was. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it. The next day the same thing happened - Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the next. This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the...

Hi Friends, Last month I had a meeting with one of my old friends, who is now VP–HR in a fairly large IT setup. He informed me that he is planning to lay off a couple of hundred people in his company, in a phased manner. What surprised me was that he mentioned that out of them around 80% are ‘difficult employees’. I wondered aloud what was his definition of a ‘difficult employee’. What he told me was interesting and forms the basis of this post. “In every department/organization there are few people who are arrogant, demeaning (to others), insubordinate, not trustworthy, (always) cribbing and unproductive. And these employees are a huge drain for an organization in terms of wasted time, reduced productivity, inefficiency, and ultimately resulting in customer loss.” I again asked him as to why did the team, then not take precautions while hiring? He said these are traits and sometimes it is difficult to observe them during an interview. You get to know about them only from...

Hi Friends, I am sharing with the reviews of IBM on work culture, growth prospects salary, done by their employees. Please share your views. A Project Manager wrote: What I like about IBM: "IBM offers a very flexible working environment. In most cases, no one will ask you what time you come or go from office. Neither the logs of the swipe card will be analyzed to take some action against you in normal circumstances. In special circumstances, the company can even allow you to work from home. No blocking of internet or phones . All in all, you are "not" working in a jail. It has a wealth of knowledge..... " What I don't like about IBM: "Sometimes you feel that there are too many processes to follow. The company is so huge that it is a challenge to make people aware of existing processes. I have often seen it happening that sometimes small groups within IBM try to develop their own processes, often unaware that such a best practice already exists and can be leveraged. Ofcourses, Lou...

In many ways, a manager has to be a leader, so therefore a manager will have many of the traits that a leader does. However, I feel the term 'manager' applies primarily to business, it's in a manager's best interest to lead his co-workers effectively, encouraging them to achieve their goals and targets. In my experience, a leader is more of a social thing; more associated with team work, too. Go to Discussion http://lnkd.in/wUJe5E
