The questions by Dixit saab: 1.Chule Ki Roti is better or bread. 2.Fast Food is better or customs(regular ) food., are most relevant in todays's context. I prefer regular food but not fast food.  Nutritious, hygenenic food is most important. Even...

Cost and success strategies to tackle volatile markets By Sarah Hills, 10-Mar-2009 Cutting costs is the top priority in 2009 for food and beverage companies, according to a report from Deloitte which outlines strategies companies can adopt to stay ahead in challenging economic times. A survey conducted by the business advisory firm showed that 31 per cent of respondents have made cost reduction their number one issue this year, with 73 per cent of businesses reporting substantial input cost rises in the last 12 months. However, just eight per cent implemented price increases to match these rises and 37 per cent passed on all cost increases to their customers, said the report called “Food an...

Solar powered renewable energy systems could help food manufacturers become more sustainable, says Perpetual Energy Systems (PES). The US based PES, a financier and developer of solar energy systems, announced yesterday the activation of solar installations at four of Foster’s wine estates in the US, which, it said, will in total generate 3.85 million Kilowatt hours (KWh AC) of energy annually. Laurance Friedman, co-chair of Perpetual Energy Systems, told that large scale food operations, in much the same way as the wineries, could use roof mount and/or covered parking solar installations to help power their plants. He said that the solar installations in the wine estates will eliminate two...

In the US market its possible but not in our country. The solar panels cost is very high and its not affordable for Indian beverage manufacturers.

large Community Kitchen or free food schemes organised by Tirumala-Tirupathi devasthanm can very well utilise this opportunity since India is having more than 270 suhn shine days. However as some body pointed out the solar panels are exorbitantly...

The FDA’s non-objection in December that the stevia-derived sweetener Reb A was generally recognized as safe (GRAS) was greeted with much fanfare – but how has it been received so far by industry and consumers? Two companies, Cargill and the Whole Earth Sweetener Company, a subsidiary of Merisant, developed scientific dossiers for Reb A that they submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year. Cargill developed its Truvia brand in collaboration with Coca-Cola, while the Whole Earth Sweetener Company joined with PepsiCo to produce its PureVia brand. Reb A was hailed variously at the time as the ‘holy grail of sweeteners’ and ‘the third generation’ of sweeteners due to being ca...

Austria’s health department has confirmed that Red Bull Cola contains traces of cocaine but at levels that do not pose a public health risk but Jordan has joined a major German retailer and banned the drink. The controversy erupted 10 days ago when the food safety agency (LIGA) in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia detected 0.4mg of cocaine per litre in  red bull Cola, a level German authorities have subsequently said also presents no public hazard.  But it did not stop the German retailer, Rewe, pulling the product from shelves in its stores in six states. Bans have also been implemented in Taiwan and Hong Kong.  Jordan’s Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) said Red Bull would be p...

Chinese authorities have said its new food safety law, which comes into effect today, will help prevent the food contamination incidents that have caused so much damage to the reputation of its domestic producers. The legislation aims to toughen up the country’s food monitoring network by imposing more stringent standards, stricter supervision and a recall system for tainted or substandard products. The government has also pledged offenders will face severe punishment. The Ministry of Health, which will coordinate the law’s implementation, has drafted several extra regulations on food standards, the control of food risks and the management of new products. Health Minister Chen Zhu announced...

The classical food risk analysis model, developed in the 1990s, breaks the risk analysis process into three stages: risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication. But some scientists believe that this model – and practices associated with it – may not be addressing consumers’ concerns on challenging food safety issues.   SAFE FOODS project SAFE FOODS, an EU-funded Integrated Project (running from April 2004 to June 2008) has developed a more holistic approach to food safety, responding directly to consumers’ concerns. The project has brought together 37 consortium partners, including leading European scientific food research institutes, organisations, universities and partners fr...

Consumer concerns about a synthetic growth hormone used in milk production have prompted two leading food producers in the United States – General Mills and Dannon – to reformulate their dairy product lines. It is a decision that will have immediate implications on the dairy market as a whole, but could also mark a turning point in the use of new technologies in food production in general. rBST (recombinant bovine somatotropin), a synthetic hormone that promotes milk production in cows, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993. Since then, it slipped into the milk supply chain in the country, used as a means to improve production capacity and efficiency. The United ...

Economic terrorism and deadly strains of E. coli are among the main food safety issues that manufacturers could face in the US in 2009, according to a law firm which represents victims of food-borne illness outbreaks. For 2009, Bill Marler, food safety advocate and managing partner of law firm Marler Clark, asked the food safety community to weigh in on the most pressing food safety challenges. Top of the list was globalization, including the possibility of 'economic or chemical terrorism' , which may not directly intend to scare people but is the intentional adulteration of the food supply motivated by profit, as in the case of the recent melamine scare in China . A lack of regulation for ...

Good cereal harvests this year have not ended the food price crisis in developing countries, warns the FAO, as it gears up for next week’s Hunger Summit. The UN agency’s latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation report acknowledges that international food prices have fallen from recent peaks. However wheat and maize prices strengthen in October and rice export prices are still higher than before the crisis. “For the world’s poorest people who spend up to 80 percent of their household budgets on food, the food price crisis is not over yet,” said FAO assistant director General Hafez Ghanem. The situation is worst in countries that are net food importers, but overall 31 countries are said to ne...

The word 'Push' has traditionally characterized FMCG sales systems in India. This is changing for the better in many ways. Sales in many companies like HLL, Marico and Colgate is secondary driven. Let me explain this to a reader who is new to sales jargons. Secondary driven basically means that retail orders to the distributor (secondary sale), which are a function of sales from the retail shelf(offtakes), determine the volume of primaries (billing from the company to the distributors - primary sale). In traditional sales systems the disproportionately high targets were driven by billing high volume of stocks to the distributors (primaries) without there being an adequate movement of stock from the distributor point to the trade (secondaries). This system worked as long as the brands has a demand (pull) that was proportionate to this loading. However in case of inadequate offtakes, this extra stock used to lie at the distributor point or die in the shelves of the retailer. In case...

Over the years, we've grown the Moz blog to nearly a million visits each month and helped lots of other blogs, too. I launched a personal blog late last year and was amazed to see how quickly it gained thousands of visits to each post. There's an art to increasing a blog's traffic, and given that we seem to have stumbled on some of that knowledge, I felt it compulsory to give back by sharing what we've observed. NOTE: This post replaces a popular one I wrote on the same topic in 2007. This post is intended to be useful to all forms of bloggers - independent folks, those seeking to monetize, and marketing professionals working an in-house blog from tiny startups to huge companies. Not all of the tactics will work for everyone, but at least some of these should be applicable and...
