When people ask me to suggest themes for human resource conferences that they are planning to organise and I recommend such themes as “employee rights”, “know your labour laws” and so on, they frown and tell me that such themes are unattractive and irrelevant. They finally settle for much “cooler” topics such as “winning the war for talent”, “building high performance organisations”, “talent engagement strategies for the future” and so on. Even as I see more and more business and HR leaders engaged in debating such esoteric themes, I have this strange feeling that we are missing out on the “basics”. One of the “basics” that concern me is the current level of respect that organisations seem ...

Reasons why you need a mentor You might call yourself a self-made man, but you surely can not do without the services of a mentor if your career has to grow. S/he can give you guidance, direction, help you in achieving your goals and also give you suggestions when you really need it. Read on to find out why you might want to consider having a mentor: If you and your boss just don’t get along: You have been asked to work on a new project and you have managed to do a good job but your boss still thinks your project is not that great. Back to Basics in HR   When I was a kid we played outside. We played games that we made up. We played baseball using patches of dirt for the bases. We played the games and were our own referees. Our parents were nowhere to be found. And we didn’t need them. What happened to us in business? Companies don’t start out with giant policy manuals and “annual processes.” Startups get moving and do the work. They don’t need rules because everyone knows what they need to do. They know how their actions affect company success. And their performance isn’t adjusted once a year — it’s done every minute every day. Then the rules start. Do you see kids out there today organizing their own pickup baseball ...

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty. He asks one of his new students to stand and..... Prof: So you believe in God? Student: Absolutely, sir. Prof: Is God good? Student: Sure. Prof: Is God all-powerful? Student: Yes. Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm? (Student is silent.) Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good? Is it possible to be innovative in HR? I think the jury is still out on the ultimate answer to that question. My personal opinion is that innovation within the HR function often follows the 'Kaizen' model of taking good ideas and working very hard to make incremental improvements on them to make them better. I rarely see a true Sunburst idea in HR that will light up the sky. One trend I have been noticing of late is the concept of sharing or swapping employees. Today I noticed several reports of a story that originated in the Wall Street Journal about employees being swapped between companies to spur innovation. According to AP reports, Google and Procter Gamble are now swapping employees a...

It’s true that practice makes the man perfect. It was my stint with the leading life insurance company of India under tremendous sales pressure which helped me in learning new tricks of this trade. I have sold thousands of policies in last two and half years. For me, it’s very easy to identify in only two minutes, whether the customer is really serious in doing some investment or he has just called for information gathering activity. I have been the top performer and given various prizes. I have the reputation of converting 7 out of 10 clients if the customer has money in his pocket. I have earned lot of respect and money in this industry. At some occasions I picked policies worth million in just 10 minutes. I have never followed customer more than 2 times. I think any sales people must do that. I have habit of closing the deal at the discussion table in the first meeting with the client. Secret of my success is hard work and dedication. I have never given up. Each policy that I...

In world of financial engineering , I have this information to share with you . Well the financial risks could be averted by adopting these measures . Have a look at these measures and you will know ..... The concept of livelihood insurance, where contracts will protect individuals from long-term economic risks such as the loss of a paycheck or the depreciation of one's home value. The concept of what he terms "macro markets" - where individuals, corporations, and governments alike can trade or hedge risks associated with the fluctuations in GDP or national incomes. The concept of income-linked loans - where lenders will make loans to governments, corporations or individuals whose repayment terms are tied to the incomes of these entities. Such repayment terms could be a certain percentage of one's income, which would cause the outstanding balance to decline if income levels decline. This would reduce the change of bankruptcies but will also alleviate our fears of taking more risks...

Hi Friends, I came across this interesting review of RBS  done by the employees of RBS  on www.talentequity.in I am sharing it with you. An emoloyee wrote: What I like about RBS Associates: " Good work and personal life balance. Good compensation and benefits and domain learning opportunities though not very good but still adequate opportunities are there." What I don't like about RBS Associates: “Kind of work is not very good. Job Security in the turbulent financial markets is not very good. Good work mostly done out of onsite office locations " To read more of this and other reviews of RBS Associates: http:// bit.ly/xKILv Please revert with your views. Regards Samera

THIS IS LONG - THIS IS ALSO A MUST READ !!  Sri Lanka Foreign Minister Late Lakshman Kadirgamar's after-dinner speech OFF THE CUFF , in the UK, at which Sri Lankan Cricketers were present. How many ministers can make a similar speech today? This was at an earlier World Cup time. "Captain Atapattu and members of the Sri Lankan team, Members of the Sri Lankan community, Friends of Sri Lanka, Ladies and Gentlemen, Some historians say, I think uncharitably, that cricket is really a diabolical political strategy, disguised as a game, in fact a substitute for War, invented by the  ingenious British to confuse the natives by encouraging them to fight each other instead of their imperial rulers.   The world is divided into two camps - those who revel in the intricacies of cricket and those who are totally baffled by it, who cannot figure out why a group of energetic young men should spend days, often in the hot sun or bitter cold, chasing a ball across an open field, hitting it from time...
