When people ask me to suggest themes for human resource conferences that they are planning to organise and I recommend such themes as “employee rights”, “know your labour laws” and so on, they frown and tell me that such themes are unattractive and irrelevant. They finally settle for much “cooler” topics such as “winning the war for talent”, “building high performance organisations”, “talent engagement strategies for the future” and so on. Even as I see more and more business and HR leaders engaged in debating such esoteric themes, I have this strange feeling that we are missing out on the “basics”. One of the “basics” that concern me is the current level of respect that organisations seem ...

Back to Basics in HR When I was a kid we played outside. We played games that we made up. We played baseball using patches of dirt for the bases. We played the games and were our own referees. Our parents were nowhere to be found. And we didn’t need them. What happened to us in business? Companies don’t start out with giant policy manuals and “annual processes.” Startups get moving and do the work. They don’t need rules because everyone knows what they need to do. They know how their actions affect company success. And their performance isn’t adjusted once a year — it’s done every minute every day. Then the rules start. Do you see kids out there today organizing their own pickup baseball ...

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty. He asks one of his new students to stand and..... Prof: So you believe in God? Student: Absolutely, sir. Prof: Is God good? Student: Sure. Prof: Is God all-powerful? Student: Yes. Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm? (Student is silent.) Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good? Student: Yes. Prof: Is Satan good? Student: No. Prof: Where does Satan come from? Student: From...God... Prof: That's right. Tell me son, i...

Is it possible to be innovative in HR? I think the jury is still out on the ultimate answer to that question. My personal opinion is that innovation within the HR function often follows the 'Kaizen' model of taking good ideas and working very hard to make incremental improvements on them to make them better. I rarely see a true Sunburst idea in HR that will light up the sky. One trend I have been noticing of late is the concept of sharing or swapping employees. Today I noticed several reports of a story that originated in the Wall Street Journal about employees being swapped between companies to spur innovation. According to AP reports, Google and Procter Gamble are now swapping employees a...

From 15th June 2011 Every Advocate shall be entitled as of right to practice before any court in India including Supreme Court. Section 30 of the Act says: “Subject to the provisions of this Act, every advocate shall be entitled as of right to practise throughout the territories to which this Act extends; in all courts including the Supreme Court; before any tribunal or person legally authorised to take evidence; and before any other authority or person before whom such advocate is by or under any law for the time being in force entitled to practise. Earlier, the Supreme Court in Aeltemesh Rein vs. Union of India and others AIR 1988 SC 1768 had issued a writ of mandamus to the Central Government to consider, within six months, whether Section 30 of the Advocates Act, 1961 should be brought into force or not. The Court, however, held that it was the discretion of the Central Government to bring this section in force by issuing a notification in this behalf. In spite of the...
