Many people believe that creativity is inborn and only a chosen few are creative. While it is true that creativity is inborn, it is not true that only a chosen few are creative. Everyone is born creative. In the process of growing up, educating yourself and adapting yourself to your environment, you slowly add blocks to your creativity and forget that you had it in the first place. The difference between a creative person and a person who is not so creative is not in the creativity that they were born with but in the creativity that they have lost. How can you enhance your creative ability? One possible way is to observe the habits of creative people, identify the ones that you feel will wo...

Are you creative? Do you want to do things differently? If I ask these questions to anybody, I am pretty sure in most of the cases I will get affirmative answer. At the same time I know, I will get response in negative, if I frame the same questions in a different angle. Can you show me an instance of your creativity? When you went to do X, why didn’t you take a different approach? When the first set of questions talk of one’s dream, the second set of questions is entirely practical. My argument is what barriers a person faces while trying to do things differently? First and foremost why we do? The answer is, yes we all know, it is for our bread and butter. For the sake of argument I am jus...

Innovation is not necessarily high end. The synergy between high-tech science and the grassroots is throwing up technology-based solution for local problems. There are many innovative applications - from creating a tree climbing tool to producing a tool to generate energy from running tap water. Even though these tools and solutions developed for the rural segment have opened up new markets for micro entrepreneurs, these innovators need support to increase the scale. 'It's difficult to scale something down, especially in the technology space. You need to make sure that what you are developing is reaching out to the bottom of pyramid,' said Sanjay Swamy, CEO and founder, mChek. 'It's all abo...

We are hired for our ability to use our intellectual resources - to find solutions, suggest the road ahead, develop plans, chart courses of action etc etc. The boss is looking for relevant, practical acceptable plans which are both effective efficient. To a human being, ‘thinking’ is hard work. Given a choice the ‘head’ is a procrastinator. It will look for the simplest way out. Employees come in various shades – from those who don’t want to, or cannot think, or lack the ability to innovate and think fresh, to those who seem to do wonders every time. So what happens – confronted with an issue, the former is most likely to look for precedence, dig old files presentations, google for templates, activate his / her networks etc till he has a start point. Thereafter it is the familiar story of Controls C V. The first time this gets the approval of the boss, we are comfortably on the road downhill. Some of our subordinates fresh out of college have the ability to start with, but...

In many ways, a manager has to be a leader, so therefore a manager will have many of the traits that a leader does. However, I feel the term 'manager' applies primarily to business, it's in a manager's best interest to lead his co-workers effectively, encouraging them to achieve their goals and targets. In my experience, a leader is more of a social thing; more associated with team work, too. Go to Discussion http://lnkd.in/wUJe5E

I’m an old geezer on the community network who chips in here and there. Over a period of time I get a feeling that some of our less experienced members are not too sure about what to initiate as useful topics for discussion / debate. To help them out I have put together a set of five questions which they may ask themselves before initiating discussions. May I request more experienced members to chip in with more questions / suggestions / guidelines to make the whole process more purposeful. The set follows:- 1. does the topic add value / knowledge to the community? 2. is the topic worthy of attention / discussion? 3. will the topic lead to / inspire action? 4. will other members like to refer / share it with others? 5. will someone from our community benefit from the topic?
