I just got my weekly mailer and the top three news were all about lay-offs. So I typed lay-off news on google and got a shocking long list of lay-offs.  D o you think lay-offs are back?

Lay-offs happen only when you don't have business. In Kolkata I am seeing many big companies shutting their doors. The reason is poor business. I don't know the scenerio of the other states of India, but this is happening in our state.

No i don't think so that recession is back. Reason of lay off is different than earlier.

To cut costs and decrease expenditure across several companies they may lay off some top executives which is very hard to exceaptable.

THE formula for success in job interviews is not written in stone, especially when it comes to tricky questions. For instance if you are being interviewed for a sales position, a potential employer may ask you, “What would you do if a clients hinted at kickbacks?” How would you respond? Will you appear shocked or deliver your answer with poise? Here are some suggestions on how to answer 10 such questions. Being prepared will give an edge, and not to mention, boost your confidence.

Hi Friends, Last month I had a meeting with one of my old friends, who is now VP–HR in a fairly large IT setup. He informed me that he is planning to lay off a couple of hundred people in his company, in a phased manner. What surprised me was that he mentioned that out of them around 80% are ‘difficult employees’.  I wondered aloud what was his definition of a ‘difficult employee’. What he told me was interesting and forms the basis of this post. “In every department/organization there are few people who are arrogant, demeaning (to others), insubordinate, not trustworthy, (always) cribbing and unproductive. And these employees are a huge drain for an organization in terms of wasted time, re...

I think the term difficult employees should be used to those who don't have flexibility in their attitude. They suffer serious consequences.

Hi Friends, I am sharing with the reviews of IBM on work culture, growth prospects salary, done by their employees. Please share your views. A Project Manager wrote: What I like about IBM: 'IBM offers a very flexible working environment. In most cases, no one will ask you what time you come or go from office. Neither the logs of the swipe card will be analyzed to take some action against you in normal circumstances. In special circumstances, the company can even allow you to work from home. No blocking of internet or phones . All in all, you are 'not' working in a jail. It has a wealth of knowledge..... Nearly everything is finding a home on the Internet, and software development is no different. But this trend called platform-as-a-service, or PaaS, could have huge implications. In theory, PaaS makes it far easier for businesses and other enterprises to develop their own applications, instead of licensing or buying the applications from software companies. The change represents a fundamental disruption to how software gets distributed and consumed, says Paul McNamara, chief executive of small PaaS vendor Coghead. The trend marks "a significant watershed event," he said. PaaS can be applied to any market, by any company, according to William Blair Co. analyst Laura Lederman. "The emergence of the PaaS offering also represents something more fundamental: a challenge to the way applications are developed and to the vendors that currently dominate software platforms," Lederman wrote in a recent report. One such dominant software platform is Microsoft 's ( MSFT ) Windows. How much of a...

The King is ailing, who will succeed the King? That is of course the question on the mind of Apple’s shareholders, employees and to a lesser extent its customers and clients (who will jump to a Droid or Google, if and when they create products that excite and service them as well as Apple products). Despite protestations and reassurances from Jobs and Apple COO, Tim Cook, and despite their not just weathering, but thriving during Jobs-less times, an Apple without Jobs makes many nervous to their core. If we were to think of Jobs not as a unique and irreproducible person, but as a mindset, skill set and capacity that could be deconstructed and then modeled, not only could Apple continue its amazing growth, but other companies might follow suit. Much has been written about Jobs trying to figure out his “secret sauce” so that others might use it to propel their companies and careers to extraordinary outcomes. 1.     Dropped out of Reed College 2.     Calligraphy 3.     Psychedelics...

Written by Nisan Gabbay Facebook was launched in February 2004 by Harvard undergrad students as an alternative to the traditional student directory. Its popularity quickly spread to other colleges in the US by word of mouth, and the site now registers close to 15M monthly UVs and over 6B page views per month. Facebook has completed two rounds of venture financing at very high valuations, the first at a valuation of ~$100M and the second at ~$550M (valuations are unconfirmed). These valuations were driven by the multiple acquisition offers that Facebook has reportedly turned down (the latest was a rumored $750M offer). Facebook is already generating significant revenue, so despite all the valuation and web traffic metric hype, it has also established a very real business. Interviews conducted: Noah Kagan, early product manager for Facebook. Noah will soon release an e-book on Facebook, with good insight on the social networking space. You will be able to download the book at Noah s...

Free Style Marketing How many times have you been to a business conference that guided the world to sell things for free? Well, if you never heard about one, then you need to know about Nokia World 2007 Conference where Chris Anderson, Editor in Chief talks to the world referring to this. The campaign broke all the traditional rules of selling a service product. As per Chris, the new way to sell today has changed focus from the actual product to the complementary product or supporting product that could enhance the selling of original product. Chris talks about the new selling concept of 0 + 2 = 2 in contrary to the old concept of 1+1 = 2. Now, what the hell does he mean by this Maths..? Consider Company A that sells both - the products and the services on the same products. As per the traditional earning model Company A earned Rs 1 revenue from selling the product and Rs 1 revenue from the services on the product. The modern way of selling sacrifices the revenue on product to earn...
