About "Lay offs or wider salary cut is about cost recovery and not a HR policy any more" topic:
In times of recession, when some businesses delelerates and in some other businesses margins shrink incredibly. Where a business itself is seeing negative growth due to over capacity or lack of demand, like the car industry today, massive lay offs is the only solution to cut costs drastically.
But where the business stays with shrinking margins, the entire HR team need to take a huge salary cut. This is because the business needs your services but not at the existing salary levels, becoming more and more abominable every day now. like the finance, infrastructure and real estate businesses.

Dayanand i partially agree with you as this would mean that companies dont think twice before recruiting people. Again, laying off employee just mean that you dont trust your employee potential. There are other ways to deal with the situation....

Maria, please clarify your question. Are you asking about education being the benchmark/cutoff in employment or are you venting your grudge against freshers being called 'executives' and being given recruitment responsibilities?

Sony is yet again ready to layoff 10,000 employees. It is not clear if this will be from Japan or overseas. This makes us think that how unpredictable can working in big brands be. We normally think that we should go for a big brand instead of working for a small company but when incidents like this happen they tear away our dreams, make us rethink and take away our sleep. If a company is going to lay off so many people where would they go, what would they do and how will they move forward. We have no answer to these questions. According to Nikkei‘s sources, Sony might also request that its seven executive directors — including Stringer — return their yearly bonuses. Sony hasn’t officially confirmed the report, but Hirai is set to brief the company’s business plan on Thursday, March 12.

Recovery of its due has been a hectic exercise for the Banks in the absence of a special legislation. ‘Non-performing Assets’ were growing and a need was felt to reduce the ‘Non-performing Assets’ of the Banks drastically. As the recovery through Courts was a difficult exercise for the Banks, initially, a special legislation called ‘The Recovery of Debts due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993’ was enacted creating a Special Tribunal called ‘Debt Recovery Tribunal’. Under the Act, the Banks are entitled to approach the Tribunal by filing an ‘Original Application’ which is similar to filing a suit in Civil Court proceedings. However, unlike the ‘Civil Court’ which is supposed to follow the ‘Civil Procedure Code’, a special and simple procedure has been prescribed under ‘The Recovery of Debts due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993’. At the end of adjudication, the Tribunal is supposed to grant a certificate called ‘Recovery Certificate’ infavour of the Bank...

This makes the accounting of revenues or costs challenging. The Indian media and entertainment (M E) industry has transformed in the last 15 years. A common practice amongst media owners is the bundling of space across various products/programmes/channels/publications/portals. The accounting of revenues or costs becomes challenging where such space is marketed for a consolidated amount. There is no specific guidance under Indian GAAP or IFRS.
