Despite the hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars being invested in M A activities, the word 'commodity' continues to be readily associated with banking, as if by way of explaining why it is so difficult for banks to differentiate themselves from competitors. Certainly, the products and services themselves may be so similar from one bank to another to be considered commodities, but there is one thing that can never be commoditized— a bank's brand. Brand is what ultimately defends banking from the doom of commoditization. When banks merge, their brands must reconcile. More often than not, one brand is going to be nurtured and one brand is going to be retired. Yet, too often in bank me...

Product's quality creates identity for the brand. consumer always identify the brand based on product attributes. for Eg: if you want to buy a soap you usually go for Lux a product from HUL. there the product Lux comes first. Lux made a...

A brand is born out of a quality product that sells like hot cakes. Definitely, product is important but a product is not a product if it does not have a brand that it builds over a period of time and graduates from 'producthood' to ' brandhood'.
Akshay Rastogi  |  Argues in support of  "Brand"  |  2 years ago
I feel that Brand plays major role when you want people to come forward and give a try to your products. If we talk about FMCG products, if HUL or P&G comes out with some new product, we'll be doubtful but the trust factor for the brand will...

The 'Nirma' success story of how an Indian Entrepreneur took on the big MNCs and rewrote the rules of business : It was in 1969 that Dr. Karsanbhai Patel started Nirma and went on to create a whole new segment in the Indian domestic detergent market.During that time the domestic detergent market only had the premium segment and there were very few companies , mainly the MNCs , which were into this business. Karsanbhai Patel used to make detergent powder in the backyard of his house in Ahmedabad and then carry out door to door selling of his hand made product. He gave a money back guarantee with every pack that was sold.Karsanbhai Patel managed to offer his detergent powder for Rs. 3 per kg w...

Sheetal I agree with you. Very well said. Surrogate advertisement is unethical any day.
siddivineetkumar  |  Argues in support of  "ethical"  |  1 year ago
it is ethical in only certain products and has its own profits as well as side effects once the brand name is well versed to the market then there is a chance of losing the image of the parent product please tell me if i am wrong
Sheetal Jadhav  |  Argues in support of  "not ethical"  |  3 years ago
I too agree with you,  The very purpose of banning advertisements today is defeated by surrogate advertising. Here a different product is promoted using an already established brand name. Such advertisements help in contribute to brand recall....

As you pass by North Mumbai’s busy Andheri Link Road, a gigantic billboard of Avatar catches the eye. James Cameron’s world of Pandora inhabited by the Na’vi with its brilliant blues, beckons as you crane your neck trying to sweep in the huge visual in one glance. This road is an important one for all marketeers across industries since it boasts a catchment which houses the city’s youngest demographic. And, critically, with four multiplex chains within a radius of two kilometers it also attracts much of maximum city’s cine-goer as well. The Avatar billboard is 10,000 sq feet – the biggest ever for a movie – and will be up there for the next two weeks. Since it’s part of a package, the exact...

When we talk about brands in rural markets some of the names which come to our mind are Rajdoot Bikes,Ghari Detergent,Dolly TV and chic shampoo etc Findings indicated that good quality, value for money and sense of identity with brand were likely to act as key determinants of a FMCG brand in rural India. Better finish and good looks, recommendations from retailers were found be key determinants of a consumer durable brand in rural India. Lets throw some light on agro inputs also like pesticides, fertilizers, manure, seeds, tractors, harvesters, pumps and threshers etc. In this regards marketers are following market specialization strategy.HYV seeds are also becoming popular among the farmers. Free Style Marketing How many times have you been to a business conference that guided the world to sell things for free? Well, if you never heard about one, then you need to know about Nokia World 2007 Conference where Chris Anderson, Editor in Chief talks to the world referring to this. The campaign broke all the traditional rules of selling a service product. As per Chris, the new way to sell today has changed focus from the actual product to the complementary product or supporting product that could enhance the selling of original product. Chris talks about the new selling concept of 0 + 2 = 2 in contrary to the old concept of 1+1 = 2. Now, what the hell does he mean by this Maths..? Consider Company A that sells both - the products and the services on the same products. As per the traditional earning model Company A earned Rs 1 revenue from selling the product and Rs 1 revenue from the services on the product. The modern way of selling sacrifices the revenue on product to earn...

Procrastination is a process by which an individual postpones taking actions they feel they ought to be taking. This postponement can be temporary, or it may drag on indefinitely, resulting in the desired action never being taken. Many people have problems with procrastination, ranging from simply putting things off until the last minute to actually failing to accomplish anything they set out to do because they continue to postpone it. There are a number of strategies for tackling procrastination, most of which involve reorganizing basic habits, and learning beneficial ways of thinking about individual tasks Essential to the idea of overcoming procrastination is the understanding that it is not an innate, or irreconcilable problem. Procrastination is a set of learned behaviors which get in the way of accomplishing specific goals. Like all learned behaviors, procrastination can be unlearned, and more productive methods of interaction can instead be achieved. Creating concrete to do...

Nicholas Carr's article "IT Doesn't Matter" (Harvard Business Review, May 2003) challenges the value proposition for IT. He argues that as companies become more dependent on IT for their day-to-day operations, so the emphasis switches to managing availability, reliability and security. As such, businesses should manage IT as a commodity. Do you subscribe to the Carr view? Do you align IT with the business in a purely supportive role? But innovations within IT continue to create possibilities and options for businesses that did not exist before. But where IT engages the business, pro actively and as an equal, companies will be able to continue to deliver strategic advantage through IT. The following will be useful in assessing the level of business engagement: - to whom does the IT function report in your business? For example, the Board (where the CIO/IT director is a Board member), the CEO (who has a business development focus), the COO (who has a business operations focus) or the...
