What is video game addiction? What are its boundaries, its symptoms, its treatments? How wide is its scope? And is it even a medically recognised condition in the first place? In Part One of this GameSpot AU feature we speak to researchers, psychologists, medical bodies, and gamers to gauge their thoughts on the causes and effects of video game addiction, the significance of its recognition as such, and the potential for future research. We also look at this issue from the game makers' side, as well as explore some real-life cases of addiction. Is a video game addict simply someone who likes to play a lot? If asked to define 'video game addict,' most of us would reply that a video game ad...

Hi, You must have heard about 'TeachIndia - An initiative by Times of India'. By name and ads what kinds of first impression does it gives? A campaign to provide basic education to the people who are deprived of it because of various reasons like social, financial or personal ( political also). Sounds good when we know that out of three people in Inida one is illiterate. I also thought of it as a good platform to do some good work and went for the induction. Unfortunately the reality is far different from what they advertise. They introduced us to the two NGOs (after a brief intro from them )and suggested us to join one of them, thats it. And after listening to these NGO many of us were ve...

Australia a perspective In the 18 th Century British law prescribed the death penalty for stealing 40 shillings or more, so judges preferred to find thieves guilty of stealing 39 shillings in order to avoid imposing the death penalty. That resulted in prisons and moored ship hulks filling with people convicted of petty crimes such as theft and debt. Until 1783, that pressure on the available jail space was relieved by sending convicts as indentured servants to North America, which was also being settled by voluntary emigrants seeking improvement of their economic lot or else religious freedom. But the American Revolution cut off the escape valve, forcing Britain to seek some other place...

Brazil’s flag says (in Portuguese) “Order and Progress.” A few years ago I worked with a person that I couldn’t stand. And she couldn’t stand me. However, I learned a very important lesson from her: to organize my desk (or my space) from time to time. My colleague called it “order and progress” time, quoting the words in Brazil’s flag. She was quite messy in all her tasks, papers were stacked in piles with no order, and every time someone asked for a document, it took her a long while to get it. But every time her desk became really unmanageable even to her, she stopped her work, took the afternoon or morning off so to speak, and decluttered her desk. She went paper by paper, filing, throwi...

An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his situation: Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting time. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over.. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you weren't in prison. Love, Dad Shortly, the old man received this telegram: For Heaven's sake, Dad,don't dig up the garden!! That's whe...

A little boy sat with his parents in their cozy home. He said to his mother, 'Mama, you have the kindest, prettiest face in the world! I wish I could look at it forever!' As he uttered these words, his glance fell on her hands. They were twisted out of shape, badly deformed. 'Why mama!' he exclaimed, 'Yours must be the ugliest hands in the world! I can't bear to look at them!' The father took the little boy on his knees. 'Let me tell you a story,' he said gently. 'Once upon a time, there was a little boy who was sleeping peacefully in his cradle when the cradle caught fire.' 'What happened to the baby?' asked the boy. 'The nurse who was suppose to take care of the baby , ran away in alarm...

Beautiful Thought by Lord Buddha Once Buddha was traveling with a few of his followers. While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from the lake." The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?" So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink." After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake. The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same. After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back. This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha. Buddha looked at the water, and...

An old man, staying in a small south Indian town came to visit his son in Bombay recently. The son in his early thirties is a successful businessman living with his wife and son. The father, having spent most of his life at his birthplace, hardly understands a splatter of Hindi or English, forget Marathi. But he doesn't care. 'I have come here to spend a few days with my son and his family. I don't have to go out and socialize with the city people,' he said. But the son is very excited about his father's rare visit to Bombay. He wants to make the best of it. He and his wife want to show him around the city. And yes, the son enjoys those evening hours too, when he and his father go out and sit in a good bar, sipping their favorite drink. Last week he was in a very good mood. 'Let's go to a five star hotel's bar tonight,' he told his father. It was a beautiful evening. Talking about everything under the sun they had a few drinks. As usual they were offered some salad, peanuts,...

“We are travelers of the path of blooming consciousness. Staying in between beginning and the end of the path, acquiring knowledge of the whole path and the ultimate truth is impossible. Even though, one is able to reach the end –isn’t able to make known us about the whole and the ultimate truth. First time, we go forward– towards any imaginary target, on the path of life, holding different beliefs. Gradually in this way– with increasing experience and knowledge, when we become more conscious, we advance following the way of science and rationality, –supposing all are seeming truth, giving up beliefs –largely, towards the aim of true self-development. In this manner, after passing over much more distance, –with increasing more consciousness, gradually step by step– one time we come near the truth. Then holding the hand of some truths or partly truth, –we advance to the aim of absolute truth. In fact, the entire route is the way of blooming consciousness. We– in our different...

What is stopping you from getting what you want in life? Your friends? Your family? A sense that failure – or success – might change your life and that feeling uncomfortable? A sense that the people around you might disapprove of you aiming for what you want, of you succeeding or failing. Essentially it boils down to fear. The big roadblock, sometimes the massive wall in the middle of road that keeps you from getting what you want. How to overcome it? Here´s some useful ways I have found so far. 1. Taking small steps This is good for fear that can seem overwhelming at first. For instance the strong feeling – it can almost feel like a flight or fight-response – just before doing public speaking or asking someone out for a date. If you´re for instance nervous socially you might not feel able to ask people out on dates right away. The fear of being rejected and that others might think less of you if you get turned down can make many of us feel unable to ask the question. A solution...
