Give impetus to Rural Telecom.   By Abraham Paul, MD CEO Future Groups (India), FCOMNET (UAE)   In spite of the few hiccups in the beginning, the privatization has pushed Telecom business in India making the services available and affordable to common man.   Most of the issues in the beginning were due to inertia of the incumbent provider in changing their old mindset. The main aspect of telecom expansion being that it virtually reduces space making the distance immaterial, the initial decision of making the GSM Wireless Telecom license areas co-terminus with existing telecom circles was one of the major flaws. Over and above disallowing of direct interconnects between different networks ...

In every sector mergers are taking place and among them the topmost is telecom sector.   Though there has been disputes between the large national and regional telecom service providers, rural operators such as CenturyTel and Commonwealth Telephone  could be ready to do some deals with smaller outfits. I also believe the next wave of consolidation is likely to be focused more on the smaller rural properties and see the large independent rural providers such as CenturyTel as being among the acquirers  The Lucent merger :  Lucent has limited growth prospects, and those already are figured into the stock price .'We would not be adding positions based on limited upside potential,' the analysts ...

Mobile manufactures like Nokia, Motorola, LG, Samsung etc. have started to reach out to the Indian villagers trough Mandi s, Haats (unregulated markets) etc as their on-ground activity to attract the villagers towards their handsets. I think it s about time they did so, considering 70% of the Indian population are from the rural areas. The rural market is a virgin territory that has not been completely explored. The mobile penetration in the rural market is only 3% which is very small amount considering 70% of the total Indian population live in rural areas. According to industry estimates, the rural markets contribute about 5% of the national GSM handset sales. But this is expected to rise...

Virtual Mobile Networks for quick rural telecom growth. Nokia has always been highly innovative, and it is proved again! Empowering rural India and forging suitable partnerships is a win-win situation for both!!

High CAPEX / OPEX and low ARPU are the challeges in Rural telecom business. High CAPEX OPEX can be overcome by segregating Technology (Systems Networks)  and Service provision (Business) so that one or two common Systems  Network could be shared...
