Adapted From Steve Chriest I can almost see professor Peter Drucker, widely acknowledged as the creator and inventor of modern management, gazing out his office window at Claremont Graduate University and pondering the widespread economic malaise that has affected nearly every industry and company worldwide. Professionals in the field of Customer Management face strong challenges today. Challenges, that Drucker's business philosophy directly address. For me, Drucker’s genius was not only the original thinking he recorded in timeless writings, but also his ability to remind managers of the obvious—those truths that stand directly in front of us and that we sometimes forget or fail to see in ...

One can often see two ways of managing major accounts that are certain to fail. The first is management by chance. There is no control. There is no plan. No one can explain why we are winning the business or forecast how long our success will last. We do not learn from our mistakes or from our successes. This is at one extreme. At the other extreme is management by formula. Here everything is documented, controlled and decided. I have seen one account planning process which demands that for every account the team must hold a one day orientation meeting, then gather information for twenty-one working days and then hold a two day planning session. The timescale cannot be changed. The people w...

- [25/12/2006] ...

In the Geeta Lord Krishna emphatically told Arjuna,"Many people anxious to offer uninterrupted worship to God, desire to go into the thick forest; this is an insane step. There is no need to seek the jungle as if I am only there. There is no place where I am not; there is no form which is not Mine. I am the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether! Where can you find a place devoid of one or other of these five? The fiery nature of fire is I Myself; I am life in all living beings. I am the strength of the strong, the strength that is free from greed and lust. To experience My presence and My glory, there is no special place, for I am everything, everywhere, ever."

The word 'Push' has traditionally characterized FMCG sales systems in India. This is changing for the better in many ways. Sales in many companies like HLL, Marico and Colgate is secondary driven. Let me explain this to a reader who is new to sales jargons. Secondary driven basically means that retail orders to the distributor (secondary sale), which are a function of sales from the retail shelf(offtakes), determine the volume of primaries (billing from the company to the distributors - primary sale). In traditional sales systems the disproportionately high targets were driven by billing high volume of stocks to the distributors (primaries) without there being an adequate movement of stock from the distributor point to the trade (secondaries). This system worked as long as the brands has a demand (pull) that was proportionate to this loading. However in case of inadequate offtakes, this extra stock used to lie at the distributor point or die in the shelves of the retailer. In case...

If we analyse the nature of students' demand, what they want as customers are: Expert Teaching Quality Learning Resources Well-structured Courses Either Marketable Skills or a Strong Brand or even both Flexibility Fair Assessment The concept that that all learning can be made fun and easy is flawed. Although it should be interesting, the task is to teach skills. It is difficult to get away with poor quality teaching any longer. However, in the area of assessment, there is insufficient objectivity and discipline at present. There is a strong case that all assessment should be anonymous and conducted at arm’s length. WINNERS AND LOSERS There are however a number of areas of new demand which fundamentally represent good news for those in the education sector who can ride the wave in a clever way: the knowledge worker; business advice; the law; health; "edutainment"; financial planning. Not everyone can win. Among the winners in these changing conditions are likely to be: those who...
