Recombinant Proteins produced in Genetically Engineered Crops   Suresh Chand Kaushik   Indian Agricultural Research Institute New Delhi – 110 012   Before the advent of recombinant protein expression system, a desired protein either for pharmaceutical or industrial purposes has been isolated from the original source in its native tissue or organism. The protein is intracellularly processed to its native conformation. The material is in limited supply and can be expensive to obtain and maintain. So cost is the limiting factor in the sale of proteins from their source. Later on, a number of systems such as bacteria, yeast, fungi insect cells, mammalian cells have been developed and optimize...

India has come a long way since its adoption of Bt cotton in 2002. It is ranked fourth in the world among Bt crops growing countries, in terms of hectares. With a number of other Bt crops under research, the country is heading for a bigger share of the pie in the next few years .   Biotech maize, most planted crop In 2008, 17, or two-thirds of the 25-biotech countries planted biotech maize (same as in 2007), 10 countries planted biotech soybean (up from nine), 10 countries planted biotech cotton (up from nine) and three countries planted biotech canola (up from two in 2007). In addition, two countries the US and China grew virus resistant papaya, two countries Australia and Colombia grew bi...

Agriculture in India accounts for nearly 65% of the country’s employment, 26% of the total GDP and nearly 20% of total export earning and supplier of raw material to major industries. Agriculture is not only the backbone of Indian economy and food security but also a way of life, a tradition and anchor of overall livelihood opportunity for about 70 % of India’s one billion populations. Agriculture, therefore, is and will continue to be central to all strategies for planned socio-economic development of the country. Despite major advances in agriculture and strong growth in food production in the latter part of the twentieth century, food security for the masses continues to be an area of co...

plants can produce and evaluate their potential as   replacements for petrochemicals in the manufacture of polymers and other  industrial products . Companies across the world are investing in crop biofactories to identify cheap, reliable and environmentally friendly sources of raw materials.      Many everyday items that we use are made from industrial chemicals including: • Plastics – used in food wraps and containers, electrical goods, garden furniture and cars; • Adhesives – for everyday applications such as superglue and PVC wood glue; • Lubricants – planes, trains and cars; • Paints – for around the house and industrial projects; and • Textiles – including nylon and polyester clothi...

The debate is quite relevant but technically old. Just look in eastern India, basically the riverside of river Ganges, had some 3000 jute companies, started by the colonial British empire and nearly vanished with the advent of cheap petrochemical...

New Green Revolution to Increase Food Production Using biotechnology, scientists are working to unlock the potential of plants to produce crops in environments that are adversely affected by pests, drought, disease, poor soil or growing conditions.  According to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), last year 8.5 million farmers - almost 8 million of which are considered “subsistence” farmers, planted over 200 million acres of genetically modified crops in 21 countries.  Genetically modified crops currently being cultivated include cotton, papaya, soybeans and cassava. The “Green Revolution” of the 1960s relied on upfront investments by farmers ...

For the first time in history, within the framework of the G8 Summit, the agriculture ministers of the Group of Eight met to discuss the issue of food security in Italy. The Group reiterated  that agriculture and food security remain at  the core of the international agenda. One of the conclusions the Group  actively endorsed was that more needed be done to increase the quantity and quality of agricultural production and enable all citizens to have economic and physical access to safe and nutritious food.  The final G8 declaration also called for enhanced support including investments in agricultural science, research, technology, education, extension services, and innovation. It is high ti...

I a country like ours where there is heavy subsidy on fuel and where people do not pay their taxes and where there are hardly any oil reserves, fuel will be costlier and depend on international pricing.

As the worlds economy grows and flexes her muscles globally, the earth's fragile ecosystem is being crushed underfoot the march to prosperity. The Icebergs are melting, Soil is eroding, Temperature is constantly increasing, thus there arises a need for Holistic and Global perspective of ecological conservation and simultaneous economic develoment. Biotechnology as a science is contributing to long term environmental stability and development by the rapid employment of biofuels. Biofuels are the fuels, that are yielded from plants. These are easy to operate, accessible, cheap, ecofriendly and reliable. In India, we have wonder biofuel plants like Karanjia and Jatropa. A single seed of Jatropa...
