Ideas are funny like things, they won t work unless we do - I had read this small yet powerful statement inscribed on a small piece of wooden artifact during my visit to a successful entrepreneur s office. I could never understand the depth and efficacy of this statement till I moved on to the big business of software product development. It was a lifetime experience to see a product evolving out of a myriad of ideas, which had no basis for existence or evolution. But what went behind the evolution of the product from a na ve idea was an endless passionate journey of pain and pleasure, which led me to conclude Behind a successful product; there are only a handful of passionate and committed...

Sales team has set up targets for themselves. These targets need to be fulfilled as is the prime focus of the Sales team. And for all this they rely on Product Manager. Specially for B2B sales the management of the products rely heaviy on the amount features available by the product. The addition of features creats a great deal of pressure on product managers. Inspite of addition of new features there is also a case that these needs to be easily accessible. Here are some ways product managers can ensure that their product remains easy-to-use even against the pressure to add new features Add the features that are very much in demand and not on one basis demand. Keep in mind the usability fac...

Product Lifecycle Management Promises to Streamline Development, Boost Innovation By Beth Stackpole May 15, 2003 CIO Well, it s now time to come up to speed on another: PLM, short for product lifecycle management. Even in this downturn, manufacturing companies across myriad industries are investing in PLM application suites?to the tune of $2.3 billion this year, according to AMR Research. Why are these pioneers willing to take the risk, particularly when they ve been burned before on comparable, large-scale software rollouts? Because they see PLM s potential to vastly improve a company s ability to innovate, get products to market and reduce errors. (more.....)

The other day I was in a restaurant and saw a sign advertising "Sliders Fridays." From what I gathered, they offered a deep discount on tiny hamburgers, called sliders, on Friday nights. The interesting thing about this discovery is that I own the restaurant and it's the first I knew of it. (Stacey's at Waterford:  www.eatatstaceys.com ) I don't just own the restaurant. I also manage it, although I use that term loosely. I've taken the concept of hands-off management to the next level. Most of the time I have no idea what the staff is up to. They organize customer events, execute marketing ideas, hire and fire, change the menu, and pretty much anything else they want. I only get involved if there is a largish expense that needs to be approved. I see the financials daily, by e-mail, but I'm mostly about the bottom line. As a well-known critic of managers, I painted a big red bulls eye on my back when I started managing the restaurant. For the first year I was involved in the details...
