What could be wrong with the Stock Market? Today, the 1 standard deviation event occurred, Sensex numbers. Economy is predicted to grow at 10% next fiscal. Credit market working ok. No subprime troubles. Industrial numbers grew around 9% till this quarter compared to 7.8% last fiscal same time. American numbers very encouraging. Showing median of 20% less trouble than last year. What could be the explanation of the markets heading south, when it is supposed to give a 0.02% daily return. The reason can be the unprecedented upward movement of the Dow. The Quants there might not have expected the sudden surge in the index there. The hedge funds and mutual funds there depends heavily on leverage. For every 1 dollar of invested funds they can leverage beyond 10 times that. Then they short certain quantity of investment with the long position say like 70/30, 70 long and 30 short or 120/40 the same way.
