The worldwide trends in trade of health-related services are looked at in detail in the fourth paper in The Lancet Series on Trade and Health, written by Professor Richard Smith, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, and colleagues. In their analysis, the authors use the classification provided by the WTO for the General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS): cross-border supply of health services, consumption of services abroad, foreign direct investment, and movement of health professionals. Offshoring givesa great advantage in cost cut and benefits. And now Healthcare industry is focusing heavily on offshoring. WHAT COULD BE THE REASON BEHIND? The global healthcare industry is under pressure to reduce research and administrative costs and meet tighter compliance and security mandates in Europe and in the US. The market has thus begun to represent an outsourcing opportunity for IT players. last week I happened to be in Rohtak where my in-laws live. my father-in-law was very ill for a long time private hospital treatment was ineffective. since there is a famous Post-Graduate Medical institute (PGIMS) In rohtak which has many renouned specialists, we decided to try our luck there. This was my 1st brush with a govt hospital it was an eye opener for me. Written instructions on display along with personnel at enquiry counters who have the attitude of an insecure ageing movie actress ensured that the harassed harrowed patients their relatives who are a little less inclined towards literacy run around like headless chicken. Endless paperwork which needs to be filled presented at a ...

By Shane Starling, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has signaled its intention to blacklist 125 nutrients including forms of glucosamine, aloe vera and krill because it says they are not being used in products, according to the US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS). Others that appear on the list include isomaltodextranase, chitin, quercetin, mulberry bark extract, ginger extract and calcinated calcium and Eucalyptus leaf extract. But it is believed the bans are not on the ingredients par se, just specific forms that have slipped out of usage. The USDA said the MHLW was requesting additional information from the companies concerned that may ...

Next Monday, June 15, is a big day for the European healthy foods and food supplements industries. Let’s call it Big Monday. Or J15. The Buddhists call them “turning around days” – destiny-altering days where things can never be the same again – and that is what J15 is shaping up to be for the health claims regime here in Europe. Either things will be a lot clearer about how to gather and present health claim-backing data, or industry better start accepting that Europe is going to be a health claims wasteland come 2010. Is your company factoring in worst-case scenarios? On J15, about 120 executives from some of the biggest food, supplements and ingredients companies in Europe will convene a...

If a person has diabetes, healthful lifestyle choices in diet, exercise, and other health habits will help to improve glycemic (blood sugar) control and prevent or minimize complications of diabetes. Education regarding causes prevention while maintaining target blood glucose levels is of utmost importance. Diabetes Diet: A healthy diet is key to controlling blood sugar levels and preventing diabetes complications. If the patient is obese and has had difficulty losing weight on their own, talk to a health care professional. He or she can recommend a dietician or a weight modification program to help the patient reach a goal. It usually takes us much longer to change our moods than we’d like it to take. Here are ten things you can do in ten minutes or less that will have a positive emotional effect on you and those you love. 1. Watch "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. See it online at Oprah.com. This is a deeply moving segment that may be the best ten minutes you've ever invested in front of a computer. 2. Spend a little while watching the sunset with your mate. Nothing extra is necessary. Just sit and take in the natural beauty of the sky and appreciate being able to share it with the one you love. 3. Sit quietly by yourself. It doesn't really matter where or when. Just let your feelings bubble up and then experience the thoughts flowing out of your mind. Clearing your head and heart will give you extra energy to get through the rest of the day. 4. Write a thank you note to your mate. When was the last time you thanked your partner for just being who he or she is and being with you? Doing this in...

Way back in 1897 William Faulkner said, “ I believe that man will not merely endure; he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among the creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of kindness and compassion .” I’m not talking about anything new here; it’s just a reminder of what we all knew and seem to have forgotten. We seem to have been taken in by the sheer pace of things around us – the violence, the economy driven work culture, the information boom, etc etc – you know them all – and the media has only added up to the pace. We need to look around us. Where have all courtesies gone ? Been to a gathering lately ? This is a wake-up call , a reminder !! We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibres connect us with our fellow human beings; and along those fibres, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects . We need to re-learn to give; so that some of us eventually receive. It's the...
