The Singapore Agri-Food Veterinary Authority (AVA) has approved five nutrient and product-specific health claims that can now bear a ‘Healthier Choice’ symbol. The claims relate to calcium, vitamin D, sodium, saturated fat and trans fat, fibre and dietary fibre, and products must meet nutrient profiling criteria if they are to utilise the ‘Healthier Choice’ symbol. The claim approvals should encourage healthy food research and development in the area, said Brussels-based nutrition policy consultancy, European Advisory Services. “ This set of diet-related health claims from Singapore is the first in Southeast Asia, a major step forward in opening up the use of health claims for food product...

Society and Social media have an important role to play in India. Especially mental health of our children. Our doctors have learnt a set of rules or framework through which they look at each patient and categorize them as Social Anxiety, schizophrenia, paranoia, etc. I suffered from something for last five years and various doctors in various countries treated me but to no avail. Finally I came to a conclusion that I have Social Anxiety. I told my last doctor that I have Social Anxiety and asked him how to overcome it. He gave some tablets which used to give me a nice sleep. Now, I cannot sleep without those pills for having taken them for months! But the problem persists. Now, just today ...

Which supplements should YOU take? Many of us are seduced by the promise of better health and increased vitality offered by vitamin supplements. But will taking supplements really make us healthier? Tom Sanders, Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at King’s College London, says there is no ‘magic pill’ when it comes to nutrition, and as taking supplements often goes hand in hand with a healthy diet, it can be difficult to evaluate their benefits. Furthermore, nutrients from food are sometimes more readily absorbed and used by the body than those in a pill. Please find below the ultimate guide to the nutrients that are vital for good health... VITAMIN A VITAL FOR: Sight and bones, and to make infection-fighting white blood cells . Despite lab studies suggesting anti-cancer properties, there’s no evidence that A protects against tumours. RECOMMENDED DAILY AMOUNT (RDA): 0.7mg for men; 0.6 for women. GOOD FOOD SOURCES : Pumpkin, carrots, sweet potato. LIKELIHOOD OF DEFICIENCY:...

Way back in 1897 William Faulkner said, “ I believe that man will not merely endure; he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among the creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of kindness and compassion .” I’m not talking about anything new here; it’s just a reminder of what we all knew and seem to have forgotten. We need to look around us. Where have all courtesies gone ? Been to a gathering lately ? This is a wake-up call , a reminder !! We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibres connect us with our fellow human beings; and along those fibres, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects . We need to re-learn to give; so that some of us eventually receive. It's the...
