The Government segment holds a lot of promise for the smart card industry in India. The prominent project that is keenly awaited by the industry is the N ational ID card project. This will primarily help in reducing infiltration and increase internal security. Complete roll out of this project involves issuing smart cards to over 600 million citizens. The pilot is already being rolled out with 3.0 million cards being issued. Depending on the success of the pilot, fresh guidelines for roll out could be issued in 2009-10.
