‘रोटी की ताकत’ उच्च कुलीन ग्रामीण वधू अपने आठ वर्षीय पु़त्र को पीट रही थी, कोस रही थी। बालक पिट रहा था लेकिन उसके चेहरे पर अपराध का भाव न था। वह निश्चल था। उसका कसूर था कि उसने लालू चूहड़े के घर खाना क्यों खाया। गृहणी ने कहा, ‘नाश पीट्टे, मर जाणे, *चूहड़ा हो जा चूहड़ों में रहण लग्ग...’ बालक ने पूछा, ‘माँ! मैं एक टूक चूहड़े के घर का खा कै चूहड़ा हो गिया के? ‘और नहीं तो के’, गृहणी ने उत्तर दिया। तब बालक ने कहा, ‘अर, लालू चूहड़ा म्हारे घर की रोट्टी चालीस साल तै खा राह वो क्यूं नी ब्राह्मण हो गिया?’ पुनः बालक को पीटने के उद्देश्य से उठा गृहणी का हाथ हवा में ही वार करके रह गया। वह बालक के तर्क पूर्ण प्रश्न का उत्तर न दे सकी।
