About "Will artificial intelligence invade Second Life??" topic:
Popular culture is filled with
different notions of what artificial intelligence should or will be
like. There's the all-powerful Skynet from the "Terminator" movies, "Star
Wars"-style androids, HAL from "2001: A Space Odyssey," the classic
sentient computer program, carrying on a witty conversation through a
computer terminal. Soon, we may have to add another to the list. In
September 2007, a software company called Novamente, along with the
Electric Sheep Company, a producer of add-ons for virtual worlds,
announced plans to release artificial intelligences (AI) into virtual
worlds like the ultra-popular "Second Life." Video
Game Image Gallery Novamente's "intelligent virtual agents" would
use online games and virtual worlds as a development zone, where they
will grow, learn and develop by interacting with humans.

I think this is the prime reason to use A.I. Computers today have more computing power than ever before. Applications like SETI use millions of networked computers to process unimaginable quantities of data. Such power is not really needed in...

AI helps in adding more computational power to a particular feature or problem. This may result in moderate or substantial improvements to preexisting intelligence. (AI does not have an upper limit on computational capacity; we do.). The speed of...

Grown in the lab: Artificial implants (Cornea) that restore sight in partially blind patients Here is a good news: Button-shaped artificial corneas have restored the sight in men and women in danger of going blind. The man-made corneas were just as good at improving eyesight as those usually obtained from donors. In time, the transparent implants could help ease the dire shortage of donated corneas. Worldwide, 1.5million people go blind each year because they cannot have corneal transplants. Damage to the cornea, the collagen-based transparent outermost layer of the eye, is one of the most common causes of blindness. It affects ten million people around the world and can be caused by genetics, surgery, burns, infection or chemotherapy. Previous attempts to develop synthetic implants have had limited success. To create an implant that is as close as the real thing as possible, the North American and Swedish researchers grew a synthetic form of human collagen in the lab and moulded...

the old geezer writes again. here's a more non physical view of the 'second law of thermodynamics' (SLOTD). the law of entropy, or the SLOTD comprises one of the most fundamental laws of physics. it is also viewed as 'the law of disorder'. it is a straight forward law which states that in a closed system, you can't finish any physical process with as much useful energy as you had started with - some of it will always be wasted. this means that a perpetual motion machine is impossible - it will require doses of energy to continually go on. entropy (subject of the second law) energy (subject of the first law) and their relationship are fundamental to an undersatnding of not only physics, but of LIFE itself. many of us, even today, feel that having aquired the basics (in school), grads, post grads professional degrees / diplomas / skills (in various colleges), a few years of work ex, and a health looking network, our job is done. that would loosely relate to the first law - in that we...

It usually takes us much longer to change our moods than we’d like it to take. Here are ten things you can do in ten minutes or less that will have a positive emotional effect on you and those you love. 1. Watch "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. See it online at Oprah.com. This is a deeply moving segment that may be the best ten minutes you've ever invested in front of a computer. 2. Spend a little while watching the sunset with your mate. Nothing extra is necessary. Just sit and take in the natural beauty of the sky and appreciate being able to share it with the one you love. 3. Sit quietly by yourself. It doesn't really matter where or when. Just let your feelings bubble up and then experience the thoughts flowing out of your mind. Clearing your head and heart will give you extra energy to get through the rest of the day. 4. Write a thank you note to your mate. When was the last time you thanked your partner for just being who he or she is and being with you? Doing this in...
