Four thousand five hundred semi-literate dabbawalas collect and deliver 175,000 packages within hours. What should we learn from this unique, simple and highly efficient 120-year-old logistics system? The Dabbawalas who provide a lunch delivery service in Mumbai have been in the business for over 100 years. The meals are then delivered—99.9999% of the time, to the right address. Harvard Business School has produced a case study of the...

CAN INDIANS BE TRIGGERED INTO ACTION? Can you imagine a crowd of about 20 million people sitting in a big hall and watching a live debate on stage? Well, that was what happened when President William Jefferson Clinton agreed to testify voluntarily before the Senate. The advancement in Information Technology made it possible for about 20 million people to get glued to their TV sets to watch the live debate of Clinton –Monica Lewinsky affair. Ten years ago, the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky affair shocked the world, and the disclosures of a 22-year-old White House intern almost brought down the presidency of the most powerful nation on Earth. The following day, 30 July, 1998 Monica Lewinsky handed over to the prosecutors her now infamous blue dress bearing evidence of her sexual relationship with the president. On 17 August, 1998, having become the first US president in office to testify before a grand jury investigating his conduct, he admitted having had an "inappropriate...

Purchasing Lessons In a company in North India, the major raw material suppliers complained to Madhusudanan, the company’s Works-Director that their dues had not been paid even after 5 months whereas the agreed credit period given by them to the company was only 45days. The Plant Chief promised them that he would look into the matter and spoke to the General Manager-Materials. The GM simply told him that he was being guided by the MD on payment matters and if necessary, Madhu should speak to the MD. After a little more of probing, Madhu came to understand that the MD had given strict instructions not to pay any suppliers without his clearance. Madhu wrote a small note to the MD about the anguish felt by the suppliers and expressed a fear that there could be a stock-out soon if these suppliers refused to supply on account of non-payment of their dues. For the next two weeks, Madhu did not hear anything from the MD’s office. The Plant Chief preferred to wait for the monthly visit of...

Connecting the Old Age Homes/Orphanages to the Society Spurting life expectancy and plummeting social ethos: Each one of us is caught up in chasing our dreams and goals, but is least bothered about someone who needs our help next door. Life expectancy is steadily increasing, also the woes of the elderly ones who have been left out in the old-age homes by their ‘near and dear ones’ for obvious reasons. They deserve to live with dignity, and above all, want to secure themselves. Unfortunately, insecurity, loneliness and want of companionship have become a daily reality for the elderly persons.   Loosely coupled members of the society: On the contrary, orphanages for children and old-age home for elders are run as independent entities. Sadly, elders and children in these homes are forgotten these days and kept away from the mainstream life. Campus Around endeavors to bring them together in nurturing context in which elders can...
