Apple iPhone 2.1 OS update
Even a Jesus phone has room for improvement, and an upgrade to the iPhone’s Operating System (OS) software, released Saturday New Zealand time, fixes several glitches with the 3G iPhone.
In iPhone forums across the internet, fanboys are giving the upgrade, dubbed OS 2.1, the thumbs up, saying it adds speed, reduces crashes and improves reception.
The software upgrade is aimed at first generation iPhone buyers still on OS 1.x, or people who bought the 3G iPhone, the original retail version of which came loaded with OS 2.0.
Many OS 1.1 iPhone users were drawn to OS 2.0 because it provided the only entree to the wonders of the Apps Store.
But many upgraders, and 3G iPhone buyers, found OS 2.0 slow and buggy compared to OS 1.x.
The new OS is also with txt, faster to retrieve email from POP 3 accounts, and faster to install third-party apps – and less prone to crashing them. And, also as advertised, its faster to sync with desktop iTunes, and fully supports the new iTunes 8.
The bad: key features, including Flash support for the browser and cut-and-paste, are still AWOL.
iPhone OS 2.1 is free for buyers of the 3G iPhone handset. Original iPhone buyers need to shell out US$10. Instructions for upgraders are on Apple’s website here
