AN INFORMATION technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) company is investing on a project focusing on training school teachers on the English language to help students improve their English proficiency.

Romit Gupta, country general manager of Wipro BPO Philippines Ltd., said the firm had partnered with the Department of Education in Central Visayas to implement the project, which they called the “Communication Excellence for Public Education (CEPE).”

Gupta and DepEd-7 Director Recaredo Borgonia signed the agreement yesterday.

“We believe that with good teachers we can produce good students who will be readily absorbed by the industries that will need them like the BPO industry,” Gupta said.

He said the project would help public school teachers brush up on the English language especially on the critical areas often mistaken by Filipinos, like subject-verb agreements, redundancy and “Filipinoisms” such as the phrase “in fairness.”

“We have already conducted trainings to two batches with a total of 60 students in May and we have seen early improvements, which only show the potential for the project to take on a better shape than what it has now,” Rupta said.

Borgonia said DepEd-7 welcomed the initiative from the private sectors such as Wipro’s CEPE as it jives with the department’s thrust in improving the English proficiency and addressing the gap between the academe and the industries like the BPOs.

“We hope to address that (low English proficiency of students) with this simple initiative that will surely have a ripple effect to our students as each teacher would handle at least 30 students per class,” he said.

Borgonia said for the early stages of the project, they will focus more on the high school teachers and later on with the elementary teachers in Cebu. /Reporter Aileen Garcia-Yap

People are not aware what is available in a BPO it’s just not good spoken English, you get a process controlled environment, an opportunity to develop your listening skill. What is listening? Paying attention, getting into the other persons world, creating a mind map of what is being told. For this a good grasp of language is needed of the spoken part. For developing listening one has to kill his arrogance, ego.

Why is Wipro even getting into this ? Why cant they teach english to rural students in india through this initiative. By doing this Wipro is sounding the death knell for the BPO industry in india. Phillies are ready to work at half the rate charged by indians, the only thing that was stopping them was their bad command over the language but now seems like even that is going to dissappear !

It is good. Long back, Bharatya Vidhya Bhavan used to invite specialists and conduct in-house training to its teachers. Of course the expense was born by the School for this effort. Similarly, Govt schools can make use of these services to better the lives of their students. The project can be taken by the Ministry of Education, State. This topic is talking of initiatives at Philippines. Similar efforts to enrich our students will get good rewards in the future Business, in India.

Mr. Joydeep, you have presented the correct facts. Voice accent, pronunciation and diction are very important for communication, besides good listening skills. Call Centres and BPOs focus majorly on these issues in a very systematic way, that would certainly be a value addition for the teachers!

Yes it is being done in self interest of the BPO's.

Seems the BPO firm is doing this out of self-interest. Even then it is a welcome step. There are many teachers wno are not very comfortable when speaking in English. It will not only benefit them but also the students. Being benefitted by this BPO does not mean the students should join a BPO. They are free to pursue any course of their choice and join any industry. The language which is used throughout the world (majority) is English and becoming fluent in this language will only be a welcome addition to the student's resume. @Ardhenu, just because your language is superb, dont think everybody has an equally good vocabulary. Knowing english is a necessary evil till we Indians develop everything in Hindi or some other Indian language.

Really the height of nonsense because I can guarantee that the teachers are indeed well versed with the grammar and language part, may be the BPO's spoken part is excellent but that doesn't makes them superior to the teachers. How can they even think of the same, in many of the interviews I have shown the HR person his/ her real potency when it comes to English as a language. Everyone was just a donkey when confronted with me in the field of this language and literature.
Speaking with foreign nationals doesn't make them lord or knowledgeable to that language.
