India's population at 1.21 billion is almost equal to the combined population of USA,Indonesia,Brazil,Pakistan,Bangladesh and Japan.

Literacy rate has gone up 74% from 64.8%.

But girls seems to have no place in India's growth story.

There is decline in the sex ratio.

The gender bias draws the attention of societal flaws.

In this age it is foolish to differentiate between boys and girls.Girls better to call ladies have potentials to contribute in growth of society. The gender biasness is still there even in highly educated society where females are not considered so important. The girls who are fortunate getting proper educations and exposures should take the advange to show their capability.

Apart from what Pradnya has stated some pointers that need to be highlighted is the high concentration of population in some states.
States like UP, Bihar and W.Bengal have populations extremely high in proportion to their areas.
The Indian govt. should come up with some punitive measures against such states which would discourage them from increasing the burden of human population on our motherland. One such measure could be cutting off any financial aids to them.

Some awards should be declared by the state govts. for couples who restrict the number of children to one. For those who are worried about the traditional uncle, aunty relations vanishing, they can take solace that there would be such relations but from a longer chain of cousin brother/sister relationship. Anyways western countries haven't suffered any social unrest because of their decreasing population and lack of direct uncle/aunty relations. In fact its vice-versa.

All the crap about demographic dividends by a big population should be forgotten. (The Chinese govt. isnt stupid to understand it if it were to be true). The huge strain it creates on the natural resources far outweigh the benefits of a diverse demography.

There should be concerted effort by Indians in restricting the population and reducing it for this country to get prosperous and progressive.

There are other facts too.
the fourty percent population of our contry lives under the poverty line.
Corruption is Spreading around us.

The Women condition was only good in ancient days. Where there was no difference in man and women. but in that day to yet. women prove herself from ahilya to rani lakshmi bai and from indira gandhi to p. t. usha, saina nehwal, sania mirza and many other you see around the professionals, activist and lakhs of others. They are fighting for their right. and it will be soon when the ancient days will repeat themselve. Hoping for Best.
Am quite disappointed that the literacy rate in India is going up so slowly. As per the United Nations Development Programme Report 2009, there are 98 countries with a literacy rate of either 90 per cent or more (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_literacy_rate). Would be great if India was among the top literate countries.

Thanks.Sarika for referral. One thing is crystal clear from your statement which is about the accuracy of "CENSUS" Data. As for the positive side, the ever increasing literacy, though some areas are lagging behind.

I hope the higher percentage literacy will eventually lead to abolishing this gender discrimination

few people in this debate talk about one child policy of China, which should be adopted by India according to them. at some grounds we have to understand that their is an exorbitant differences between us and rest of the world. by adipting one child policy we cant kill all those relations which are really meant to us and we cant even ignore them.
anyways for me this is not an solution. one thing that come into consideration is our literacy rate. all literates in India wont go for more than two and maximum three children in his/her life. we all know this very well. definitely one and only solution of population burden is awarness about this issue. ok it sounds good that we announced an increases percentage in literacy rate but we have to consider that in what proportion we got this increment. people below poverty line and people earning near Rs 50 per day, the ratio doesn't have any drastic or dramatic changes. this is our ground problem. we have to concentrate on this section. these people are nor educated nor they aren't aware about sensitive issues.
finally inclusive growth and development can change things in India where we can visualise equal distribution of rights and freedom for everyone.

A good info. But, accuracy & reliability is under the purview of question marks. To some extent, we can assume that these info are reliable. But, accuracy can not be assured.

Sarika thanks for referral. The good signs are decrease in population growth ratio and increase in literacy rate. the girl child has now being taken care of and should make a rule that the first issue should be a girl. If china can adopt one child per couple why not India? Second child should be boy and sex determination is allowed only if the above rule is implemented.

In Austria if some couple have nine children they can retire in peace with lots of Euro which is given by the government which will last their life time. This being done since the is negetive population growth.

We are a society, which is threatening its existence itself. Also there's difference between literacy and education. Many people who can read, write but can't make decisions. Education makes a person complete. But by just focusing on literacy i.e. reading,writing,counting..we cannot develop.
