Free Web Hosting

- The majority of free web hosts cannot afford to offer 24/7 or any support as they are offering free hosting.

- Many free web hosts do not allow FTP access, which is an obstacle if one has many files to upload this one of the major flaws with free web hosts.

- Many free web hosts place their banner and text ads on the website.

- Very few free web hosts with their plans offer control panel.

- Ones website is placed in a sub-domain or a folder with a large number of free hosts, which results in poor search engine rankings most of the time.

- Much disk space or data transfer is not offered by free web hosting plans. This can be a problem if one have a lot of large files or if ones website generates a lot of traffic.

Paid Web Hosting

- Most paid web hosts offer 24/7 supports.

- One will not have any unwanted text or banner ads placed on ones website with paid hosting.

- Control panel such as cPanel, Vdeck, Plesk or Ensim which offer features like web stats, the ability to password protect directories, and the ability to create web based email accounts are being offered by a lot of paid web hosting plans.

- One will have ones own domain name (consumerswebsite.com) which will not only result in better search engine rankings, but will also look more professional. Thus ones website will not be placed in a sub-domain or folder.

- As with paid web hosting one gets more disk space and data transfer, one can add more files to ones website and it can also handle more traffic.

- Most paid web hosts are offering FTP access.

- Couple programming languages such as PHP, ASP, CGI/Perl, the majority of paid web hosting plans is supporting Cold fusion and JSP.

- Best technical support

Thanks Sameer for sharing this information. Since you have started the topic, you may like to talk about the advantages / disadvantages of paid shared hosting and co-location services, load balancing, redundancy, latency, etc.

Ah, I'm afraid that I disagree with you or maybe we can agree to disagree with each other. I myself come from Holland and Israel.
If I want to order there (Holland and Israel) dedicated server 4 Gb, 2Tb bandwidth, 1 Tb disk space and it cost in Holland and in Israel between $300-$400 per month, same as with you by the way as almost everywhere in India.
I go out for the best in the world and I find myself in the US for $79 pm (per month), same configuration and $179 pm with all services 24 hours. Plus my providers are on the Internet backbone, absolutely blinding speed.

For $79 pm I work indeed with the ticket system, but for $179 I work directly.
Don't believe me? We have the Internet and do a search, which is what I did that time.

In Israel and Holland, the web hosting companies almost disappeared, because they could not handle the opposition with such low prices. The same story with IBM PCs. Also disappeared, because they did not adopt to the market. An IBM PC for $3000 and a clone for $350 those times.

Same for the web design companies. Before they could charge the customer what they wanted, now we have CRM systems (like WordPress), where the customer can make a professional site in record time and totally for free with minimal knowledge.

Internet is changing, Mr. Sameer. People and customers are not limited to country boundaries and national dignity anymore, unless they are thieves from their own wallets. You - as web hosting company - must adapt, otherwise you will lose money and maybe your business as well. I don't mention my provider here to honor you, but please don't be blind to the fact that there are now more opportunities for people who need a website and webserver, Windows, UNIX or Linux, Clouding or not.

If I must charge my customers prices based on what you charge, I will be out of business soon. With the prices I can charge now, I can push your customers out of the market easily, because I will be much cheaper and earn more money.

An other good alternative (which I forgot to mention, sorry about that), which is even more cheaper then anything you and I can come up with is cloud computing with for example Amazon (toostep is working with them). There you pay only what you actually use and that is with the majority a fraction of what you can offer and what I pay. In practice you pay up to $20 pm for average use for a static website, or $120 pm for a very busy site.
All the additional services like clustering, load balancing, redundancy, etc. are all included, not to forget the security and backups. You need a database, alright, create the database and you pay what you use. Do you want an SQL Server 2008 or a DB2 or Oracle? You never pay a penny for installation or setup or configuration costs, because they are all already installed. Running out of disk space? Impossible, because you can go up to the the terabytes of storage and you can still grow.

I understand that cultural foundation is a very valuable commodity in India, the same was in Holland. Also to bring business to the US instead of keeping it in India is not serving India well, because it is too expensive and India can't compete in the International market. And you yourself market US servers as well.

But to pay more then 10 times for that commodity, that is really too much.

@ Mr. Wim Vincken
you are right, if your website is heavy then I have plan of premium hosting or dedicated server hosting in India and us with affordable coast. I can provide you test domain. i know web hosting service providers, most of them working on ticketing systems. and they dont have professional staff.
but in my company we work on mail and phone. we like to do work first, we dont like to west our customer time in ticketing.

Sorry Mr.Sameer, but I learned this the hard way. I started my sites with free hosting and after being suspended, I went to paid hosting. It started with the $4.95 per month, then it went to $80 per month and then I discovered that dedicated hosting was the best for me.

The advice I can give to anyone is as follows:
1. If you have a simple (static) website, free hosting is excellent. As long as the p age is in HTML with (almost) no processing on it.
2. if you have a website with some more functionality, like a guestbook or some simple order entry, a paid hosting would be suitable. As long as you don't allow users to add their stuff in your site, because then you have no control anymore (like a forum).
3. If you have a website with database and (medium to heavy) processing, a dedicated server is applicable, unless you want to take the risk to loose business and face (when you get suspended).
4. If you have something special and heavy duty, or your website is too large, or you have windows application (like with ASP.NET), then only dedicated servers.

If you are talking about load balancing, redundancy, etc. - with other words, the advanced issues with websites, databases, security, etc., then you are not talking about shared or free hosting. In that case you get your servers at your location and hire a specialist.a
An other option you have is get a company doing that for you, like with a dedicated server. I personally use that option, because for me it is much cheaper to get another company do the dedicating hosting then me. Personnel, equipment, housing, maintenance means delays and that also means that I pay at least $10,000 per month for those services, while I pay currently for the company with dedicated servers $825 per month.

Load balancing? What is that? The company is doing it for me.
Clustering? What is that? The company is doing it for me.
Backups? Must I do that? The company is doing it for me.
Website slow? Before I start complaining, the company takes action.
Security? So complicated. They are doing it for me.
Maintenance? That's what they do.
Newest models of servers? service packs and updates? They do that stuff for me.

For me personally there is nothing to discuss, I can spend more time on doing the business and not waste it with fooling around with hardware, software, etc.

Well, here are some problems hidden here, which are not mentioned here.
Free web hosting is nice, but the things are in the hidden issues, which are (maybe) somewhere mentioned, but hard too get until your site gets suspended. For example. If your website on a free hosting account causes more then 11% of the processor load, your account get suspended. When you read the TOC of the company, only a few mentions this.

For the paid hosting, there are other issues, which are honestly also for the free hosting. If you or your customers post something - for example, using bad language, you might get suspended. If you have a forum, the chance that you get suspended is high.
Also here are problems with the overload of your site. If you - for example - install TikiWiki, which is very heavy for a server, you will get suspended.
Also the speed of the site is mostly slow, because you share the same processor with many other websites.

The third option is Dedicated Hosting. That means you get a server for yourself and that is of course faster and you don't need to worry about the content. The price is an issue here, because dedicated hosting cost from $35 per month and up. For a server with 4 Gb of memory, 1 Tb of disk, dual processor cost already $79 per month.

Oh, and for you guys who want to get a website provider, take a US provider, not a local one, because their service is not as professional, they are simply 4 to 5 times too expensive and mostly very slow. Simply take the best.
