As part of their commitment to environmental responsibility, many retailers are creating eco-friendly stores.

I applaud those retailers who are taking a leadership role in redesigning their stores, developing eco-friendly practices and working with their suppliers to provide environmentally-friendly products....

However, retailers often overlook how they can benefit from updating their in-store and back-office infrastructure with the latest energy-efficient technologies.

When developing plans to upgrade or replace POS systems, manager’s workstations and desktops, retailers should follow the energy-efficiency path.

One such eco friendly technology is IBM surePOS 100. It combines energy efficient performance and advanced retail technologies. It is a package which was used by large enterprises but now SMB can also be benifited by it.

Retailers have the choice of displays, printers and cash drawers, as well as an optional internal CD-ROM. Standard and powered ports connect new and existing peripherals, enabling retailers to create a cost-effective configuration.

The advantage of this application is

  • Allows retailers to merge critical applications and peripherals into one POS system, helping to reduce costs associated with the use of unproven solutions from multiple vendors
  • The new system boasts an energy-efficient, C7 2.0GHz VIA processor that draws only 20 watts of power.
  • The energy efficient VIA processor helps reduce power consumption to help reduce total cost of ownership

Now apart from IBM many other players are developing this technology.

There are certain general guidelines that a retailers should follow when developing their own retail chain so that you have an energy foot print of your store they are

  • Choose a system configuration with an 80 percent efficient power supply.
  • Choose a system that has power management technology -- and enable the technology on existing systems.
  • Replace CRT monitors with LCD technology.
  • Choose a system with a BIOS that offers a wide range of configurable management options.
  • Choose a system processor that provides the maximum level of power efficiency.

With both business and consumers placing increased emphasis on green issues, there’s growing pressure on retailers to show that the environment is high on their agenda. IBM's retail system is one step forward towars going green in retail........
