This piece of news article caught up my eye in the recent TOI article which I thought would be great if I share this news with my other friends on the platform. You are just seeing India developing on major fronts but may be you don't know this as these things never get reported as the Media thinks there is no controversy or anything which is entertaining by which it can get some mileage, but this is some serious issue where many of the developed countries are dumping all their garbage in India, making India a Global trash can lately.....to know more read through the article below people......

At the start of the millennium, the picturesque Spanish city of Barcelona decided to ‘go green’ and free its historic land of waste. And so, 103.7 metric tonnes of Barcelona’s garbage — from shredded plastic carry bags to used diapers and napkins — arrived last August at the nondescript port of Tuticorin in southern India.

The three stinking containers were promptly sent back to Barcelona by alert Customs officials. However, for the last eight months, 72.59 metric tonnes of trash ranging from optical fibre waste to used oil cans and rubber hoses from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia have been lying at the Tuticorin dock, reeking.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OjY_rxf1cxs/Rtq-vzr4L-I/AAAAAAAAAr4/FgSllFGVHzc/s400/Emma2.jpg

Last year alone, nine containers of hazardous waste imported from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Barcelona by three different companies in Tamil Nadu were caught at the port in a clear pointer to rural India becoming a waste bin for the developed world.

This year, too, 20 containers of hazardous waste from Greece and Reunion, a French colony, imported by a paper factory in southern Tamil Nadu, were “resent” from the Tuticorin port. Used syringes, juice cartons and blood-stained napkins collected by the municipal councils in suburban London were found in a pile of rubbish dumped in a well in a farm at Kemmarampalayam in Coimbatore in August 2008.

But why are the developed nations dumping their garbage on Indian soil? Simply because shipping municipal waste to India is about four times cheaper than recycling it in their own land. While it costs Rs 12,000 to recycle a tonne of rubbish after segregation in Britain, shipping the rubbish to India costs just about Rs 2,800.

Cement factories in Tamil Nadu also import toxic garbage on the pretext of using it as fuel. These consignments are booked innocuously as ‘mixed waste paper, plastic scrap or latex’ to hoodwink customs.

“As most of these consignments smell foul, we check it. And we send the samples to the Pollution Control Board to ascertain if it is hazardous or not. And then we take the necessary steps, sometimes sending them back to the countries they came from,” says Tuticorin port’s additional customs commissioner S Chandra Mohan. Importers of municipal waste, especially paper and cement factories, prefer the Tuticorin route as it is a minor port and offers better chances of easy passage.

None of the Indian ports have scanners to detect the actual contents of the consignments. Environment protection laws in India are not stringent enough to curb imports of hazardous waste, say environmental activists. “When toxic consignments are caught, the importing companies manage to get relief from the court,” says a customs official.

Four containers of smelly waste are still docked at the port. More importantly, the State Pollution Control Board’s environmental engineers, who are responsible for monitoring the dumping of hazardous waste, fail to act swiftly in several cases. “They take a long time even to give the laboratory test reports and it leads to unnecessary delays in resending the waste,’’ a customs official says.

After a British TV channel exposed how toxic waste from municipal councils in the UK were being dumped in farms in western Tamil Nadu, environmental engineers were asked to keep a close watch on the industrial units that imported the trash. Vigilance and anticorruption officials raided the offices of the Pollution Control Board’s environment engineers. While one of the engineers was caught with Rs 7 lakh in unaccounted cash, in another district pollution control office, wads of notes were, ironically, found dumped in the dustbin.

Junk yard

Used surgical gloves, sanitary napkins, diapers, medical waste, syringes, optic fibre cables make up the ‘rubbish’ consignments at Tuticorin port.

2008
40 containers of ‘mixed wastepaper’ imported by ITC from the US were confiscated after they were found to contain municipal waste of an eco-toxic nature

2009
Nine containers of toxic waste from Malaysia, Barcelona and Jeddah imported by Excel Trading Corporation, Sree Jayajothi Cement and Harbour Petro Chem, seized

Mar 2010
20 containers of trash from French colony Reunion and Greece imported by Sripathi Paper and Boards confiscated

I've just added pictures to make the article from TOI look more real and also relevant, And among worlds top 25 dirtiest cities our own Capital Delhi & then Mumbai are in chart with Delhi at 24th Place and Mumbai at 7th place....and this information is from my side people, if we don't take some stern action against it, may be the next time it will be any other city which you or me are residing in it........

So,  what do you think people, how to handle this problem? which is making India a Trash can...

very good information posted by you ayan. developed countries are dumping their waste on us and living at the cost of our life. the regulators and government is sleeping still where there is an urgent need to bring a stringent environmental regulation policy to safeguard our environment. The parliament has never discussed on matters like this till now. It is a very serious issue need to be answered by the government, and the matter has to be exposed in media for a corrective action. The acts of the corrupted officials and regulators has to be checkmate by the media by bringing awareness in the people.

Mr.Ayan you have brought to the notice of all in toostep. It is a good one to create a impact towards awareness, but steps should be taken to curb and it is the duty of the local administration to look into the matter very seriously. It is major concern for all.

Mr. Ayan very good article. Yes it is a cause for concern. We should try our level best to stop it. Not only the companies involved but the persons involved should be strictly monitored and handled with. First of all all the ports should have scanners to see what is there inside the containers. A trash is a trash is a trash. Even if there is a business opportunity we should ignore it. See there is a toxic content in the trash which makes it more hazardous to all the people involved in management of the trash. We Indians are by nature not very precautious in general. So seeing an opportunity in it will be of no use.

Excellent post Ayan, yes this is some serious issue and its good that Customs officials are not allowing them into the country, but some people in the name of managing waste are dumping waste into India, and nice information from most of you all but Mr. Shantaram has given excellent points, let us look at this as an opportunity and make India as a Technical hub for Waste processing.

Now the time has come to make strict law against those who involve in all this.... or think on that part if people can do better themselves in the area.

india could be a strategic technical hub for waste processing as a corporate opportunity also leading to job opportunities under NREGA - india could enter into jvs for technology transfer alike the nuclear deal, and the subject could be dealt with it under the supervision of the environmental and pollution control authorities and our minister Jairam Ramesh may be too pleased to earn carbon points and generate a Copenhagen type initiative on this as a global opportunity with strategic interests for inida.

NDTV could conduct a panel discussion raising public and government attention while this could prompt a discussion in the parliament giving food for the opposition, as well as providing agenda for the government for inclusive actions as this could fall in the scope for the Aam Admi agenda -

our respected PM is kind enough to look into genuine matters, but issues need to be brought to his attention in the PMO and through the parliament - alike the IPL controversy, etc. otherwise, how can a democratically elected government function proactively without such fuel input. or the agenda needs to come through the route of the global CEO!

government is a system programmed parliamentary model where every input is screened, and if Yes processed further through the government machinery which otherwise has lot of other things to do. a file must reach the table so that one can act, as company affairs minister recently and rightly clarified with relevance to the IPL - it is the opposition elected MPs who must find out what is happening in the field and then the elected Ministers will take note thereof and act professionally based on the notes generated upwards thereby doing their daily bit of homework for the question hour. handling a minsitry is alike handling any other government job under the policy manual.

while for Mukesh Ambani as he nicely puts it - india is a land of billion opportunities leading to the Forbes magazine gaining a rightful place in the billionaires lists with large diversified greenfield business projects. PPP is a convenient tool for the government to offload public services, so that ministers can find time to effectively handle the files when they come to the table at their own pace, except when the issue rocks the parliament when the government machinery is ready to crack down on the IPL owners and is able to get information fast - better late than never! yes governments need to be politically correct at the given time. so it be with the global garbage management issue!

therefore Ayan this is opportunity for NDTV to take the democratically viable initiative for social impact by the media making it a sustainable media CSR initiate!

hope this sounds well,

regards,

kshantaram

Yes, I also feel the same. For this government need to develop sound system which includes adherence of the hazardous waste to the public and how it effects current/future generation people normal life, to defeat this govt has to build strong regulation in accepting the incoming consignment from foreign countries with regard to that concerned parties has to aware in relation to waste management system and how it impacts our economy..

This is sad. Some group of people are doing this for their personal benifits. I think now time has come enforce not only strict laws to curb such things but the importer should be punished may be for LIFE. So that others will not engage in such horrendus activities.
Thanks for this piece of information. Since I always thought TIMES OF INDIA only publish Sories. Probably now onwards I will buy one copy each day.

Some very very strict governing laws can only help this situation. if the Govt lacks the initiative in this case, we all will end up existing in large dustbins and so will our kids.

PUT A STOP TO THIS RIGHT NOW.

good piece of info....about how we indians are cutting off our next generation's age limit....I always thought and will think that unless and otherwise our law is changed ...instead of long court cases and delayed awards for the guilty we (india) should opt for some strong severe and fatal punishment to those guilty for this act....it should be considered as equal to a murder or attempt to murder....anything...there should be death penalty for those who book such stuff and dump in our country....and same penalty for those who are corrupt...unless and otherwise we dont have such a law we wont come out of this...

Very relevant topic, Mr. Ayan,

There are, in fact, many laws prohibiting import of hazardous waste, but the petty traders always try to smuggle these into India, in collusion with the corrupt officials, without any concern for the safety of our nation.

Media, NGOs and other public spirited citizens should continue to be vigilant to expose every venal effort of the nexus of profiteering traders, degenerate officials, et al.

Governments and regulators are required only to take care of the larger interest's of a nation and its resources as individuals or local bodies can at best take care of themselves and in vicinity.
Yet when Governments and regulators turn loose the collective decision making, deviate from reason and become a set of individuals involved to self service obviously malpractices can flourish. And this is happening almost all over.....except with some islands of hope.

BJP too is forcing him to resign but he is seeking legal options to stay in. No one wants him, everyone knows how corrupt he is still he is not willing to leave! what should this attitude be called? Do you think he will resign at will ?
Yes it can be called inside information from a blog. We cannot the understand the real feeling without facing a similar situation.
