I partly agree with Amit. Yes the way a child is groomed, nurtured and its immediate surroundings play a huge role in shaping his or her future. But as much as the society plays a part, the inherent nature of a person has immense contribution in what the individual eventually turns out to be. There is a strong leadership quality seen among some children at a very young, they tend to be more dominating and always leading whether be it games, academics or cocurriculars through the academic years. To sum it up I feel leaders are neither born nor are they created but the answer lies somewhere in between....right combination of the both ensures the making of a Leader!

Your attitude towards certain situation makes you a leader or a follower. Those who you can inspire and those who you can change also determines whether you are a leader. Being a leader is lonely and leaders do not follow the normal paths to recognition. Leaders travel the road less travelled. Leadership comes with experience, guts, intuition, power to bell the cats!

Leaders are neither born nor made, they are propped up by the times & situations. In the favorable environs, ‘X’ may become a Leader of the times, because (s)he is thrown up by ‘the cause’ & ‘the lead (the people)’. The times do hold-up only someone with certain ‘leadership qualities’ which are either innate or acquired by a person, in response to a particular pricking situation.
It was the discriminatory travel norms for the ‘Whites’ & the ‘Non-Whites’ – in Railways - that provoked “Gandhiji” to fight for the right to equal dignity in South Africa. And much later, it was the collective desire of the Indian People, for freedom, that “Gandhi” was bolstered to be the leader of the times.
Like, till that eventful situation of Gandhi’s Luggage being thrown out of the 1st. class, Railway compartment, “Gandhiji” was a typical NRI, like any others of then or Today, who has acquired Law Degree from U.K. and migrated to S.A., as there were greater earning opportunities there.
But for the times, he would have lived and died an anonymous life. This is not to deny his contribution of “Satyagraha” & “Ahimsa” – which have inspired great leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King (Jr.) and many others.

Leaders cannot me made..the very term leader itself implies so ..to put it crudely a leader thinks DIFFERENT rather unconventionally, so how does one make a leader through a conventional method? no doubt we can make doctors,engineers,teachers..we can't replicate Mahatma Gandhi,Mother Teresa,Rabindra nath Tagore and so on, coz we do not know the ingredients to make one. Let us not be confused about leadership and success in terms of wealth and fame, the latter can be even inherited at times, and a leader can't be merely appointed or selected...he emerges.

Thank you Joydip...for the lovely thread

I believe that we all are born same....its the circumstances and how we respond to them shapes us different. Thus, leader is not born but made.

Some person have in born leadership qualities, but the history of leaders reveals that they are all very common people and later they become leaders due to various reasons, inferiority complex, poverty, revenge are some extra ordinary reasons. For eg.Hitler, Abraham Lincon etc.

Having someone echoed the word leader in my ears, reminds me of many people in my sight. I see M K Gandhi, I see Nelson Mandela, I see Dhirubhai Ambani, I see Steve Jobs, I see Mother Teresa, I see many many such mavericks & I don't think these people are made,,,these are BORN.

Yet, such people pave us the way,,,to conquer,,to move ahead,,to win while loosing, to live for a purpose & such traits makes a leader,,any of us,,at any time.

Leaders are born and not made. It is possible to cultivate the leadership qualities and acquire the required skills, but the person will be a no match when compared to a born leader.

Leaders Are made only in an ever changing environment of the leader.
Some claim to be leaders by birth and fool the followers, public for some time.

All leaders are made through unwavering conviction and faith. Leaders bring whatever it is out into the open, and people decide if they should rally for it. When enough people begin to believe “in” it, it becomes imprinted in our minds and thus spread the word.

Leaders are born!! They are people who are different than others. Their thoughts, behaviour, interests and their overall attitude all are reminders of a person who is meant for the larger things in life!! Larger is not necessarily riches, but it is in terms of work, notable achievements, path breaking events...

Leaders make a mark in everything that they do and you would generally find a lot of people listening to him, emulating him and even talking about him... That is the hallmark of a leader! Thanks for teh referral Ramanatha :)

Though its become a myth that leaders are born. But i partially disagree this.I think leadership quality is made through upbringing of that child, basic schooling of his/her.Its true leadership cant be learnt. Its somewhat comes from ownself. But nobody born as a leader. So as i mentioned above, those could help in making leadership quality.

My view is that the leaders are born just before they start their training to become a great leader, qualities may differ depending on their birth qualities and circumstances. Without having born there cannot be any leader.

Though many of the early theories postulated that Leaders are born and tried to find out the unique traits and behavior, researches could not establish that it is true. In my opinion the inborn characteristics and traits help people to emerge as leaders if they are trained. On the other hand training will not give the desired results if the person does not have any qualities that a leader should posses. I would say people born with the desired traits can be made good leaders. For one to demonstrate the characteristics of a leader, he should be exposed to suitable situations. People who encountered traumatic and demanding situations transformed as leaders according to researches. Such situations make them go through a deep self reflection.

no one is born as aleader. it is the skills & perseverence of a person that makes him/her a leader. truly speaking, one can be made leader by grooming him, teaching him to take the challenges and risks.so, when the adverse situation arises, the one who comes forward and takes the charge of the situation is a LEADER !!

Leaders are made, period!! By deafault, each birth is accompanied by first, a mother and then the father and soforth! It is the family, neighbours, schooling and the society which imparts into him/her those qualities, which are then utilized to the best of her or his capabilities and in grooming to be a good leader. Circumstances and capitalization of opportunities set apart those individuals who thrive on differentiating good from bad and ultimately, pave the way for others to follow. Gain strength from within, have a vision, clearly communicate, listen, plan, lead participate and people will follow!!
