New York: Tired of social networking? Logging off Facebook? You're probably not the only one.

Fearing for their privacy or perhaps just bored with using the site, 100,000 Britons are said to have deactivated their accounts last month.

And Facebook fatigue seems to be catching. Some 6 million logged off for good in the US too, figures show.

Worldwide, the rate of growth has slowed for a second month in a row and as it aims to reach its goal of one billion active users, Facebook is having to rely on developing countries to boost its numbers.

The figures suggest that there could be a ‘natural limit' for Facebook's saturation.

There is even speculation on blogs that, as is feared for its failing rival MySpace, the website could one day sputter into oblivion. Earlier this year, executives announced that the number of Facebook accounts held in the UK had reached 30 million, accounting for about half the population.

The milestone was an increase of 4 million from last July and represented the highest saturation of any country in Europe.

But times change and last month more than 100,000 in the UK stopped using the website, figures show. In the US user numbers dropped from 155.2 million to 149.4 million throughout May. In Canada there was also a fall of about 1.5 million users, while in Russia and Norway numbers also fell by more than 100,000 users.

It's not all bad news for the site. Worldwide, Face-book is still expanding and has around 600 million users, thanks to strong growth in countries such as Mexico and Brazil. According to Eric Eldon, of the website Inside Facebook, which obtained the figures through analysis of the company's advertising tools, there is a point at which the site can no longer grow, once it has established itself in a country

I disagree with most of the views here that FB is a nuisance. Nope it is not, rightly used it could benefit you a lot. What was fb started for - it was a basic networking tool. As long as we the users keep it that way, there wont be a problem. But what did we do, we ended up using FB as a personal album barring all right from posting photos of our becoming adult ceremonies to our nuptial night / honeymoon. And then we blame Fb and call it a nuisance and say it has invaded our privacy. But the question to moot here is who made it that way ? certainly not fb !
Today we use FB as a personal diary, even our travel, appointments etc. are all listed in it.
This is akin to those who call credit cards a nuisance after not knowing how to control their expenses and balance their payments to enjoy the 30 days free credit judiciously !

Thanks Padmaja for referral. I think now FB is more of a advertising platform as compared to social networking site.

Earlier parents use to scold children wasting time by watching TV nonstop then computer,mobile...now this Face Book...really this network eats valuable time. I never preferred for business nor in personal. Of course it depends on person to person how they would like to plan to waste their time in such a way!!!

Nice information. I dont have account on facebook becose i dont consider it sociel networking site. Only way you can devlop your sociele network by meeting friends and relatives, attanding function and helping other. To seat on the computer and add friends in your account is not sociel networking. This is just way to share a thoughts of each other but on facebook this is not even done.

The Facebook will not easily let you go. If you are truly determined to do the deed there are two options: you can deactivate or delete.
You can simply deactivate the account by visiting account settings and clicking 'Deactivate'. Even then, deactivation does not actually get rid of your account but leaves it ‘hanging in a cloud’, waiting for you to scurry back.
Deletion is the most adoptable way but Facebook doesn't make it easy. You have to send a personal account deletion request to the Facebook servers which have to be confirmed by email. Facebook insists that within two weeks every single trace of you will be gone from its servers, with no chance of getting it back. But even then your friends can still tag you photos around. There's no hideout actually.

i have an account which i barely use or on weekends but i dont think people have started logging off, may be people who were used to log in 24X7 dont see any fun due to over use. The number posted here are quite small comparing to FB targets and world population. Also FB keeps on adding new things like FB deals etc. Lot of people still don't know the use of FB in a more beneficial way there are lots of things to learn.

Much use of Orkut/fB/... is like putting camera in your office/leaving/bed/bath-room. I always failed to understand Y people are so fanatic about it. It becomes really boring very soon. What all you want to share over network with your friends? Was it ever required and worth to do so? Are networked people really interested to know when you eat/slip/gym/work/shit/sex/pets/... & with whom n how n whats your liking, this-that web-link, video... All just rubbish... Instead I'll prefer to pick-up a cell n call, skype, meet them.

Sharing specific photo/video is another big mistakes people do here.

Anyway, good people are drifting away from such virtual world...

I don't think it to be any non-sense kind of thing. Social network doesn't mean only to built network of peers and showup etc or find lost schoolmates. we need to think beyond, can't we use it for any good cause. If you search, you can find the answers. There are groups those are using it for productive ways.

I DO NOT HAVE FACEBOOK ACCOUNT,

BUT I WOULD LIKE TO BRING TO YOUR KIND NOTICE THAT EVEN YOU DEACTIVATE FACEBOOK ACCOUNT, IT STILL ALLOWS YOU TO ACCESS YOUR ACCOUNT EVEN AFTER 1 MONTH, YOU WILL FIND IT STILL ACTIVE WITH ADDED FRIENDS.

WHEREAS ORKUT IS ONCE DELETED CAN BE RETRIEVED, BUT ADDED FRIENDS WILL BE LOST.

ISN'T THE MAGIC AMONG SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES, IS IT?

THANKS FOR SHARING MR.ROHIT.....NICE INFO!

THANKS FOR REFERRAL......
