The government has decided that no untreated municipal sewage or industrial effluent will be allowed to be released to river Ganga by 2020, said environment minister Jairam Ramesh. The decision was taken at the first meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA).

He said an estimated investment of Rs 15,000 crore over the next ten years will be required to create the necessary treatment and sewerage infrastructure under 'Mission Clean Ganga'. The Minister also stated that state governments have also been asked to formulate detailed project reports on critical pollution hotspots and major towns.

I believe this is a good move by the govt. But i don't understand why a gap of 10yrs, it must come in to effect by max 2015.

This is a great initiative by the government. But we have to understand that this is going to be a herculean task, that's why a 10 year plan is in place. So impatience won't pay. Because it's not only the Ganga that's polluted, but various rivers/tributaries which join it at various stages makes it worse. For example in Allahabad, at sangam, Yamuna joins Ganga and the water in Yamuna seems to be more polluted. But still this is a great initiative, so let's keep faith in the government and hope for the best.

I had been the student @ ITBHU, Varanasi and had been watching the pollution / degradation of GANGA for the last more (>) than 30 years (C/O Ram teri Ganga Maili !) and have seen many initiatives/interventions by the Authorities (local University / Concerned Citizens level as well as State/Central Government levels) ... but, I feel unless there is mass awareness at societal/public level, these notifications will do little by way of bringing real transformation and the recent effort/initiative by BSF/NCC cadets was praiseworthy ...

some start by GOI but how dedicated? we have seen earlier initiatives on ganga.
what is needed is involving Civil society,NGO,Educational Institutions to be stakeholders for its success.
If Surat could get out of Rodent menace because of one single dedicated officer, we can but who will lead this initiative and is there Zeal in him to deliver !!!

By the 10yrs time every one will forget the issue and allotted money can be easily absorbed by politicians and contractors.

Y to dump waste and y clean it. stop dumping waste into it. Cancel the licences of MNCs which are throwing their waste into our holy river.
