Nanotechnology is expected to revolutionize the industry and life style of the people during the current decade, just as computers did in the earlier decades. The nanotech will change the lifestyle and perpective of thinking with its advancements in growth and innovations. It will be the most significant business, that will determine the nations economic stability and development. It is for this reason that, the Government of India is planning for large investments in R&D through several initiatives and the private companies will exploit the technology for commercial benefits.

This report on Indian Nanotechnology provides an insight into the industry, global trends and the Indian scenario. The Indian industry is analysed taking into account the developments on government front and in private corporate. 

The technology is categorized as; Nanomaterials, Nanotools and Nanodevices and the applications covered include materials and manufacturing; IT-based manufacturing; electronics; high-speed process technologies; medicine & health; biotechnology & agriculture; environment & energy; and aeronautics & space, and the promoting nanotechnology industry in India through its three major funding agencies, namely Department of Science and Technology, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Department of Biotechnology.

India has the potentail to become leader in nanotechnology, but in order to attain leadership, we need to give serious thought and support to following activities:

  • Invest extensivelly in applied R&D, capture and trap the potential of intellects.
  • Grow awareness and emphasize on its importance to future development
  • Allow FDI in Indian nanotechnology sectors
  • Go for strategic alliances and joint ventures with potentail players
  • Government investments in developing institutions and esearch centres

 Lot needs to be done, but there are various pain points as well, which require immediate concern like in India nanoscience and technology funding and policies are in their infancy, lack of capital and nanotechnology infrastructure and shortage of experienced techno-commercial managers.

Still there is a ray of hope as, various western technolgical giants are like General Electric, General Motors, and IBM have set captive R&D bases in India, smallet local players are becoming aware about its future implications and applications.

I am optimistic that in near future we will see the culture of nanotechnology dominating  everywhere and India emerging as one of the most preferrable destination fo nanotechnology....
