Some would suggest “Power corrupts”.

One view is that  the drastic changes in social and moral norms along with the ever mounting  rise in consumerism as well as competition is a natural corollary to adopting corrupt tendencies by most and sundry in order to stay ahead in the rat race.

Other viewpoint is that often there exists temptation to gain rapidly and conveniently using insidiously corrupt ways plus means within the human physic or mind. That is to say that this is a proclivity or natural tendency of human.

Does rise of corruption and arguably its invidious acceptability has something to do with lack of moral education?

Is convenience of getting things done (overriding the inconvenience of getting things done legally) too hard to resist and becoming overtly acceptable to the extent that some people, unashamedly, receive and give bribes?

Are there some loop holes in our legal system, social system or political system that encourages continuous unabated up-trends in corrupt practices?

Also, it seems that human beings, beyond their rudimentary needs of food, shelter and clothing for essential fulfillment, also consistently pine for a sense of achievement in their endeavors and daily life. Some people may not be talented or fortunate enough to attain recognition or rewards in a justified manner. This may also be a plausible reason that they look for additional income or feel hubristic in having got their work done using corrupt means.  Has corruption become a way of life?

According to you, what is the root cause of corruption, is it a serious malady, if yes, what are the remedial actions that must be taken in order to eliminate the malaise of corruption and by whom?

The due topic of discussion here gives the answer. When we are unable to have an uniform answer on what is the root of corruption , then where comes the question of removing it. Anything unless removed from its root will thrive and show its poisonous effects. Some say its people, some say political leaders while some say that the family is the root of corruption. these varied views just meddle up the whole process and put us in deep sea.

Again, corruption was there in Ram Rajya too. As Kaliyug progresses, we are deemed to catastrophe; there is no solution. On the other hand, if we check ourselves, and do not become atheists, there is probably some fear, and corruption can be reduced. Hedonism, anarchy, chaos, loss of culture, identity, lack of personal virtue, breaking of the family system, greed, pride, jealousy should not be seen as virtues, but identified as weaknesses, and eradicated, not encouraged. This can only happen if we believe in a super power, or like Ravan, we will become egotists and ravage our proud India. Individuals at the helm of affairs should bow down to a super power, as no person, system, government or committee is absolutely right or wrong!!!!!!!

Most of the communities in India (such as Bengali), are succumbed in 'Culture of Poverty'(a theory introduced by an American anthropologist Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class or economic strata, lives in pavement or apartment. Nobody is at all ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying general quality of life, worst Politico-administrative system, weak mother language, continuous absorption of common space (mental as well as physical, both). We are becoming fathers & mothers only by self-procreation, mindlessly & blindfold. Simply depriving their(the children) fundamental rights of a decent, caring society, fearless & dignified living. Do not ever look for any other positive alternative behaviour (values) to perform human way of parenthood, i.e. deliberately co-parenting of those children those are born out of ignorance, real poverty. All of us are being driven only by the very animal instinct. If the Bengali people ever be able to bring that genuine freedom (from vicious cycle of 'poverty') in their own life/attitude, involve themselves in 'Production of Space’(Henri Lefebvre), at least initiate a movement by heart, decent & dedicated Politics will definitely come up.

The root cause for corruption in todays world in one word is Commercialisation. AS commerce grows, so does corruption. In the days of barter system, there used to be less corruption as money never changed hands. The advent of paper started it all and corruption reared its ugly head to dominate. It was further accentuated by the powerful.

Sometimes by greed sometimes by undue desires.....
Avaricious and Esteem needs forces an individual to a corrupt mode. CONTENTMENT and RESPECT AND PARTICIPATIVE APPROACH TO OTHER PERSON'S PLIGHT and HUMAN APPROACH SHOULD BE GERMINATED IN THE MINDS OF ALL. Then this evil can be routed from the system.

I feel our basic instinct to pray and thank the powerful to please him is the root cause. We want to make the powerful happy by telling thanking for what he was supposed to do.
It includes God, the most powerful and least understood executive trusted with the duty of running this universe.

Corruption is the cancer of our society. It permeates all sections of society. Only the degree varies. It is more pronounced in the under developed and developing world as compared to the developed world.

See NDTV 'Big fight' video - "How do we stamp out corruption?"

http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/the-big-fight/how-can-we-stamp-out-corruption/171466

'With corruption hitting the headlines due to CWG, we discuss whether corruption can be eradicated from our country'.

Introduction of a single Biometric Smart Card linked to a money account and mandatory use of card for all transactions would usher in transparency and accountability. Currency must be demonetized in stages. All assets of all individuals must be accounted for or else turned to the government. Any left over wealth of any individual must be turned to the government. This is the best way to ensure the root cause of corruption - greed to amass wealth is curbed.

The root cause of corruption can be anything ; what we should consider is why is corruption so difficult to eradicate ?

Social reforms have removed a lot of ills from our society , like sati , child marriage , untouchability. Today , widow remarriage is not taboo.

When such ills have either been eliminated or reduced , why is corruption so strongly entrenched in our society ? And why is it missing in quite a few countries ?

I think the answer is that almost everyone of us thinks of corruption as nothing really shameful , unless taken to an extreme degree. It is like eve teasing as against rape. We think rape is condemnable whereas eve teasing is not so shocking.

The day we start condemning a bribe of Rs. 10 to the same extent as a bribe of crores , that is the day corruption will start reducing. Till then , corruption will remain a matter of debate and theorising.

Come out in the open to fight curruption and dont wait for a leader to fight for you, if you wait for a leader you will fall in to the trap of curruption. Learn to support others if you see them fighting against curruption. Obay the law even if it is inconveinient and try to help change the law if it is not good for most people and not circumvent the law or bribe to get out of mess created by the law. Learn to live with what you have that is extend your leg as per the lenth of the bed. You can then eradicate curruption.

Greed of Politicians is the root cause of curruption to day. Greedy Politician inorder to retain power will make policies and rules that will increase the gap between the rich and poor. He will keep the government servant starving and make environment clear for floodding the market with products to ensure that evry citizen even if he doesnot have means to possess it will go for it. Politician will make rules to ensure people will remain debtors always and inorder to acquaire the products in the market people will start making money through curruption. Rich will bribe the people in government to aquaire more wealth so that more poor and middleclass will be there.
Unless the mentality of people changes and curruption cannot be eradicated. People should learn to be happy with what they have and reject the goods and services which they cannit afford.

The root cause of corruption is our conflict between the ideal and practical. We think high thoughts, and practice lowly behaviour, which makes it very difficult for rational thought or behaviour. We also openly jusify our poor behaviour, express no sense of morality, and refuse to accept our mistakes. We don't work on our weaknesses, take pride in failure, and tend to look for groups that will accept our poor selves.

If there is no givers then there is no takers but unfortunately there are givers right from British period. Well those days the giving was genuine.

This today transformed into greed. By watching next door neighbour if they can have a lavish life style why cant I? So take bribe and that turns into a practice. The younger generation is watching and thinks to earn somehow and greed sets in. I don't see this practice will vanish in near future.

similarly if the politicians are non corrupt in that case the society will change but will take time.

Thanks, Akshaya for referral. The cause of corruption is "INADEQUACY".This single most inability germinates the rat race to be on par with people around. In my opinion, the remedy lies in education right from home, peers and educational institutions.

In my believe it starts in the top with our leaders.
The fish always stinks first and most from the head.
Making rules for the people is an honest thing.
But when you look deeper you will start to recognize that those rules are not for the masses, but for the officials who enforce against the people to manifest power and fill own pockets.
You can include all nations, countries, legal systems, cultures without making difference. Some are just smarter in PR.
Pointing with one finger on other systems show 3 pointing back.
Often honesty doesn't pay out and is usually quiet.
The masses get brainwashed by the media and don't know what to believe, when in other areas such corruption is shown.
A big injustice against the rat race.
Somebody said no rat would be so insane and invent rat poison.

Corruption is an issue that is very difficult to be extirpated from the society. As long as individuals are involved, corruption may be present. It can however be lessened by focusing on the root cause which is the basic human attributes - honesty, integrity and related factors. These human attributes should not be compromised under any circumstances. However, due to pressure and the environment, these human attributes become compromised and corruption gains momentum.
An unceasing series of control measures backed by improvements in individual human attributes may offer a hope for lessening corruption in the future.....
Thanks for the referral, Akshaya...

The most visible and conspicuous reason for widespread corruption is the corrupt base -social. corporate and institutional. The due recognition for social status is given by virtue of the money or wealth one has not to how it has been earned. The demand for acquiring money goes unabated on the strength of false social recognition and supply for the corrupt way of getting the things done also get the strongest support for the same lust for money and recognition. This vicious circle continues without break.

I once asked 300 policemen in Colombia, how we could reduce/remove corruption: The answer was: We have to start in the families. It starts in the families.
Corruption is mis-use of the rights and obligations you are given in a context.
If your father brags that he cheated the tax-system, bought something cheap (without paying tax or because it was stolen) or many other small kinds of corruption - it may become second nature to the son.
I chose the gender of the members on purpose. I do not know how the female version of corruption works.

Greed.
Its the basic cause for any individual to adapt the unethical way of getting the things. Another prime factor contributed by surroundings of material world (at time can be called as peer pressure). People see many things which attracts his attention and develops desire for getting it. Those who have it wants more! Those who have more wants plenty!! And those who have plenty wants unaccountable!!! The greed continues and transform/forces person to follow unethical/unlawful acts.
And in today's society, if you don't do it, you are seen as obstacle. Others are queued up either for promoting / being corrupt.
Jai Ho!
